Thinking Maps® are a language of eight visual patterns each based on a fundamental thought process. These patterns are used individually and in combination across every grade level and curriculum area as an integrated set of tools for organization and processes of related ideas. Essentially, they are graphic organizers intentionally set up to guide and deepen thinking with students.
Tree Tree Map for classifying and grouping main idea, supporting ideas, and details
Multi-flow Multi-Flow map for Causes and Effects
Flow Flow Map for Sequencing Stages and Substages of Events
Double Bubble Double Bubble Map for Comparing (similarities) and Contrasting (differences)
Circle Map for Defining in Context – Frame for Frame of Reference

Bridge Map for Seeing Analogies (similar relationships between ideas)
Brace Map for Physical Analysis of Whole, Parts, and Subparts of Objects
Have students sketch the thinking maps in pencil in their notebook as you use and model each one throughout the year. They can then refer to those visual representations during similar discussions.
