There are no official entry requirements to the course, however experience in the workshop from National 5 Practical Woodworking or S3 Practical Craft Skills is an advantage.
You work through several practical models in three units - Bench Skills, Machine Processes, and Fabrication and Thermal Joining.
National 4 pupils will need to complete each unit model to National 4 standard as well as some paperwork, then the final Added Value Unit model.
National 5 pupils will have an exam that makes up 30% of your final grade that focuses on materials, tools and machines, and safety in the workshop. The remaining 70% is your Course Assessment model which combines skills from all three units to produce a product set by the SQA.
Practical engineering courses at college or apprenticeships would be your next steps after this course. It is also useful for anyone going to university to study engineering as you will build some practical skills and knowledge.
