English

In the Senior Phase English is offered at National 4, National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher levels.

Progression is linear: passing National 5 in S4 or S5 enables pupils to join a Higher class in S5 or S6. Pupils who sit National 4 in S4 can progress to National 5 in S5 and beyond this to Higher upon successful completion of N5. Those who sit Higher in S5 can progress to Advanced Higher in S6.

All courses in English develop Literacy skills that are vital in the world of work or for further study. Many employers, colleges, and universities expect to see qualifications in English even if the job or course is more practical or STEM focused. At all levels you will improve your ability to read and listen (and show your ability to understand, analyse, and evaluate what you have read or listened to) and to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing. English courses also develop your ability to work with others, to see the world from different perspectives, and to express your thoughts and feelings.
