The course introduces learners to techniques that are important in the construction sector.
It develops knowledge and understanding of a range of construction disciplines together with the practical, technical and transferable skills required to carry out and complete a vocational project.

Students enrolled in the Foundation Apprenticeship Construction Program are actively pursuing a Level 5 SQA qualification. This qualification comprises nine distinct assessments, including both open and closed book examinations, practical assessments, as well as evaluations of META Skills and project management analysis.
Key components of the course include:
1. Develop Bench Joinery Skills (SCQF Level 5)
2. Personal Development: Self and Work (H18P 45, SCQF Level 5 - 6 SCQF credit points)
3. Level 5 Evidence Workbook, which features a practical work-based challenge.
The projects provide students with an opportunity to engage with their META skills throughout the duration of the course.
Additionally, students will be continually assessed on:
Sustainability: Waste Kept to a minimum at all times.
Waste disposal: Waste disposed of correctly/appropriately.
Employment and Behavioural Skills and Attendance: Demonstrate good attendance during the activities.
Timekeeping: Demonstrate good timekeeping during this activity.
Positive attitude: Demonstration of positive attitude to learning.
Following instruction: Show a willingness to follow instructions from person in charge.
Response to performance feedback: Respond positively to advice and feedback given on performance.
In addition to the core units, students will also be evaluated on their ability to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios, which is crucial for their professional development in the construction industry. This practical application is assessed through projects, allowing students to demonstrate their competencies in bench joinery, health and safety practices, and effective teamwork. Moreover, each student will be required to complete a reflective portfolio that captures their learning journey throughout the program. This portfolio will not only highlight their successes and challenges faced during practical assessments but also encourage self-assessment and critical thinking regarding their performance in various tasks.
The inclusion of reflective practice is integral to the learning process, as it helps students identify areas for improvement and set personal development goals. Group projects and peer assessments are utilised to cultivate these skills, preparing students to work collaboratively in diverse teams. By fostering a holistic approach to education, the Foundation Apprenticeship in Construction aims to produce well-rounded individuals who are ready to meet the demands of the workforce.
