What is Travel and Tourism?

Travel and Tourism is a National 5 Skills for Work course that focuses on customer service & employability skills along side developing a knowledge of the travel industry.

Pupils will develop:

  • skills to become effective job-seekers and employees

  • skills to deal effectively with all aspects of customer care and customer service in travel and tourism

  • the product knowledge and skills to deal effectively with customer enquiries in relation to travel and tourism in Scotland, the rest of the United Kingdom and worldwide


Topic Areas

The Travel & Tourism course is split into 4 topic areas: Scotland; UK & Worldwide; Employability; Customer Service

Scotland

This unit develops pupils' knowledge in relation to Travel & Tourism in Scotland such as recent tourism trends & the impacts of tourism on the country. It also aims to develop skills to meet customer needs by providing detailed travel information on destinations around Scotland as well as researching and investigating a 7 day itinerary for a customer.

UK & Worldwide

This unit develops pupils' knowledge in relation to Travel & Tourism in the UK, European & long-haul destinations such as recent tourism trends & the impacts of tourism on different countries. It also aims to develop skills to meet customer needs by providing detailed travel information on destinations in the UK and abroad as well as researching and investigating a 7 day itinerary for a customer.

Employability

The aim of this unit is develop skills to allow pupils to become effective job seekers and employees with a focus on the Travel & Tourism industry. Pupils will investigate different job opportunities across the industry and gain an understanding of the skills and qualities required by employers. Pupils will also evaluate their own employability and set targets to improve this.

Customer Service

This unit develops the skills and knowledge required to meet the needs of customers. Pupils will learn how to deal with customer issues and also how to promote products. Pupils will also develop the knowledge and skills required to establish and respond to customer needs.


Assessment

This course has no exam and is internally assessed by the class teachers.

Pupils have to pass a variety of outcomes across the four units. Every outcome must be passed in order to receive a National 5 qualification.

Assessment shall be done through a mixture of independent research and written tasks. All tasks are completed and recorded electronically. Additionally, there are two roleplay scenarios that pupils must take part in; dealing with a customer complaint and meeting needs of a customer through booking a holiday in travel agency. These are both internally assessed also
