National 5

The National 5 course is open to S5/6 pupils who have passed National 4 in S4, or on the basis of teacher recommendation in S3 going into S4. Pupils who pass National 5 can progress to Higher English and / or National 5 Media.

Pupils study the following: Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation (RUAE), which is assessed in Paper 1; literature, which is assessed in Paper 2 as Scottish Set Text and Critical Essay; writing skills, assessed in the Folio; and talking skills, assessed as either a Solo Talk or a Group Discussion.

Qualifications in English equip pupils with a wide range of skills: the ability to analyse and evaluate texts; the ability to plan and create independently; and - through writing and talking about texts - communication skills. The Literacy skills developed through English are vital in all kinds of job.

Homework will be issued on a regular basis but content and timings vary depending on options the class teacher has chosen.
