Entry Requirements

You should have an A or B at National 5 Engineering Science. It is also key to have National 5 Mathematics in order to cope with the numeracy skills required to pass the Higher course.

If you have done National 5 or Higher Physics and wish to take the course without National 5 Engineering Science, speak to the head of department.

Course Assessment

The course follows the same three units as National 4/5 - Engineering Contexts and Challenges, Mechanisms and Structures, and Electronics and Control.

The course is split into an exam - worth 110 marks (69%) and a Course Assignment worth 50 marks (31%). The Course Assignment will sample skills from the three units and use software to solve engineering problems. The exam will sample skills and knowledge from the three units.

Career Links and Progression

Completion of the Higher course can lead into Advanced Higher. It is a great start to engineering degrees and apprenticeships; some of the course content is covered in the first year of degrees in some fields of engineering. Mechanical, electrical and electronic, structural and civil engineering are main focuses for the course and you will gain a deeper knowledge of the roles and impacts of engineering.
