Advanced Higher

The Advanced Higher English course is open to all who have passed Higher.

The course is structured differently to National 5 and Higher, although it is based on the same skills. Pupils study the following: Textual Analysis, which is assessed in Paper 1; Literary Study, which is assessed in Paper 2 in the format of an extended critical essay ; writing skills, assessed in the Folio; and independent research and analysis skills, assessed in the Dissertation. It is worth bearing in mind that Advanced Higher English grades are weighted 40% exam and 60% coursework.

Qualifications in English equip pupils with a wide range of skills: the ability to analyse and evaluate texts; the ability to plan and create independently; and - through writing and talking about texts - communication skills. The Literacy skills developed through English are vital in all kinds of job. The high level of analysis and communication involved in the Advanced Higher course make it particularly relevant to those who might want to study Law, English, Social Sciences or Cultural Studies at university or college, but it has benefits for all.

This is what OC, an ex-pupil who studied Advanced Higher English had to say about the course: I thoroughly enjoyed sitting Advanced Higher English and it's probably one of the best qualifications I have. English has always been a valuable subject to me throughout school as I always found it to be so varied, as we had opportunities to study different types of literature such as plays, poetry and short stories. For me personally, AH English helped me to identify the types of literature I enjoyed, as there is a lot of freedom at this level of the subject when it comes to choosing pieces for your Dissertation, and also the fact that your AH Folio can consist of whatever types of writing you choose. For instance, I wasn't a big fan of discursive / persuasive writing in other levels of the subject, so for my AH Folio I submitted two creative pieces - this really allowed me to flourish and embrace my creative writing skills, and actually enjoy writing my pieces instead of being stuck creating pieces I felt 'forced' to write. This was probably the main reason I enjoyed AH English so much - there was so much freedom and room to experiment with different types of writing, both in my Folio and my Dissertation. AH English also increased my confidence in myself greatly, as I often shared my Folio and Dissertation ideas with my teacher and received extremely helpful and honest feedback. Two years on from studying AH English I'm now at university studying a science degree, and even though sitting this subject didn't directly contribute to the degree and career path I have decided to take, it has shaped my writing and analysis skills a considerable amount, and I think it was 100% worth taking!

Homework will be issued on a regular basis but content and timings vary depending on options the class teacher has chosen.
