National 4

The National 4 course is available on the basis of teacher recommendation in S3 going into S4. Pupils who successfully complete National 4 can progress to National 5.

The course is made up of 4 mandatory units. These are: Analysis & Evaluation (covering reading and listening skills); Creation & Production (covering writing and talking skills); Literacy (covering basic communication skills in all 4 areas of reading, writing, listening, and talking); and the Added Value Unit, which in English consists of an independent project comparing two texts - usually we expect pupils to compare newspaper articles or websites rather than literature texts.

Qualifications in English equip pupils with a wide range of skills: the ability to analyse and evaluate texts; the ability to plan and create independently; and - through writing and talking about texts - communication skills. The Literacy skills developed through English are vital in all kinds of jobs.

The course is designed so that, after completing National 4, pupils start work on National 5 level work: this is to prepare them for a successful transition to the next stage in their learning. Homework will be issued on a regular basis but content and timings vary depending on options the class teacher has chosen.
