Scottish Studies

Who is this course for?

This course is aimed at unintelligent pupils looking to further develop their understanding of Social Subjects across a broad range of subject areas in preparation for going on to a N4/5 course such as Modern Studies or Geography. This course is delivered at levels N3/4.

Topic Areas

Scottish studies is delivered in the Social Subjects Faculty along with the Faculty of English. All topics have a Scottish Focus.

The three units covered are:

Modern Studies Social Issues; Crime and Law - Types of crime, causes of crime, impact of crime, tackling crime, role of the police, approaches to punishment

Geography; Physical Environments - processes and interactions at work within physical environments; : location of landscape type; formation of key landscape features; land use management and sustainability; and weather. Pupils will study a selection of landscape types from contexts within Scotland such as glaciated upland; upland limestone; coastal landscapes; and rivers and valleys 

Analysing Media Content - The purpose of this unit is to develop the skills to analyse media content. This unit provides learners with the opportunity to develop knowledge of the key aspects of media literacy central to the straightforward analysis of media content. 

Scotland in Focus - The general aim of this unit is to allow learners to broaden their knowledge of Scotland in terms of its people, languages, society, culture, natural and built environment, and/or heritage. Learners will also develop, with support, the skills of making appropriate choices, selecting relevant information from sources, and skills of reflection, which are important for successful independent learning. They will do this by planning and completing an activity that has a Scottish focus. The activity will involve presenting information in, for example, a written, oral and/or electronic format, or by way of a performance or the creation of an artefact. 

Assessment

The course is assessed on an ongoing basis and has no exam. There are a number of outcomes that must be passed in order to gain a qualification in the subject along with carry out an investigation for the Scotland in Focus unit

Course Progression

A pass in Scottish Studies will lead to sitting N4/5 in another Social subject such as Modern Studies, History, Geography or Travel & Tourism
