The National Progression Award (NPA) in Technical Theatre in Practice at SCQF level 6 is designed to provide you with a range of design skills for use in technical theatre, specifically: lighting, sound, prop making or model set construction.
You may also have the opportunity to integrate your skills through a project, depending on which optional Unit is selected by your teacher.
There are many jobs that utilise key skills you will develop in NPA Technical Theatre.
Technical Theatre in Context
You will have the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the technicians involved in the production process.
You will be introduced to the technical aspects and terminology of a theatre production.
You will also have the opportunity to analyse a live theatre production.
Theatre Design
You will be introduced to theatrical design and develop practical design skills, specialising in set, props, costume, lighting or sound design for a production.
You will create a folio of your design work.
You will carry out research, explore a text, create designs and drawings, and work as part of a production team for a theatre production.
Working with others, you will develop communication skills in on-going collaboration with fellow members of the production team.
Specialism
You will have the opportunity to specialise within a particular area of Technical Theatre.
You will develop knowledge and skills to operate and maintain relevant equipment associated with your chosen area.
You will gain practical experience of operating a range of equipment for a production.
You will be assessed in four areas:
Your knowledge and understanding of theatre roles, terminology and practices within the production process.
Through your investigation of a range of performance spaces.
You will identify technical aspects required within a textual extract.
You will identify and describe the technical aspects.
Your teacher will assess you through a range of open and closed book assessments, and oral presentations.
You will be assessed in four areas:
You will demonstrating knowledge and understanding of theatrical design.
You will demonstrate your ability to match a theatrical design to a text and performance space for a production.
You will produce final designs in liaison with the director and production team.
You will communicate your designs and oversee their realisation for a production.
You will create a folio throughout the year which your teacher will assess continuously. You will also be assessed through oral presentations and in production meetings.

These units are specific to each production role but all require both written and practical evidence of knowledge and skill.
Choosing NPA Technical Theatre will allow you to develop all of the meta-skills, which will help you become a creative and adaptable learner, promoting your success for the future, whilst also making you stand out in the job market, as someone who can creatively collaborate and think outside of the box.
