About the Course:
The course builds on the skills and practice that have been worked on during the Broad General Education in S1,2,3 or during the National 3 Applications of Mathematics course. The course will:
1. motivate and challenge learners by enabling them to select and apply straight forward mathematical skills
2. develop confidence in the subject
3. enable learners to use numerical data
4. allow learners to interpret, communicate and manage information in mathematical form.
5. develop learners skills in using mathematical language
Entry Requirements:
Teachers will recommend learners for levels and courses during S3. If you have any queries please speak to Mr Giffney (Faculty Head).
Course Content:
The course is split into three units:
Expressions and Formulae - The general aim of this Unit is to develop skills linked to straightforward mathematical expressions and formulae. These include the manipulation of abstract terms, the simplification of expressions and the evaluation of formulae. The Outcomes cover aspects of algebra, geometry, statistics and reasoning.
Relationships - The general aim of this Unit is to develop skills linked to straightforward mathematical relationships. These include solving equations, understanding graphs and working with trigonometric ratios. The Outcomes cover aspects of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics and reasoning.
Numeracy - The general aim of this Unit is to develop learners’ numerical and information handling skills to solve simple, real-life problems involving number, money, time and measurement. As learners tackle real-life problems, they will use their knowledge of number processes, information handling and probability to make informed decisions.
Assessment:
The National 4 course is assessed internally using SQA produced unit assessments. Each of the three units are assessed individually and a pass must be achieved in each unit for a full course award to be certified. There is also an added value unit that is completed at the end of the course, this is an assessment based on all content covered in the course:
Paper 1 (20 mins) - Non Calculator
Paper 2 (40 mins) - Calculator
Passing this course will also give candidates an SCQF Level 4 award in Numeracy.
Progression:
After completing this course candidates can progress on the following pathways:
1. Complete N5 Numeracy - this would give candidates an SCQF Level 4 award in Numeracy.
2. National 5 Applications of Mathematics
