Prologue: The necklace
When I was three my mom died.
After her funeral, we went to the cemetery in the woods to bury her. I held my dad’s hand the whole time but I let it go when I found a necklace on the ground. I looked up to ask my dad if I could keep it but suddenly he wasn't there. Neither were the casket bearers. I started to cry. I wanted my dad really bad. Then I noticed the necklace design. It had a unicorn, a fairy, an elf, and a dragon and it was a pearl necklace. The symbol was pure gold. I wanted my dad more than ever now. So I pulled my eyes away from the necklace and prayed, wished, even hoped. Then suddenly some leaves started swirling and I didn't know what was going on but, I had the urge to follow, so I grabbed the necklace and stuffed it in my pocket. The leaf swirl leads me straight to… my Dad!
He yelled, “Catirina!”
And he ran over and picked me up. Then we went over to bury mom. The whole thing was really sad but in the forest, I got an imagination.
I’ll tell you how this story changed my life.
Chapter One: Morning Glory
“Morning Glory, Morning Glory!!” my dad yells through my dirty broken door. Morning- Glory was what my dad called me in the morning. In the afternoon he called me Midnight Dove
“ Morning Glory!”
Maybe I should miss the bus. Then I could stay home with Gloria, my guinea pig, and watch TV but then my dad would make me walk to school and I really don't want to walk three miles I live in the middle of the woods.
Super cute girls (SCG) say I live in a shack. The closest high school is three miles away from my house. That's where I go to school. So now I was starting to get worried that I would miss the bus so I rushed downstairs grabbed my backpack and waited. I waited and waited and waited then I checked my watch which was an hour ahead this what it said: 7:17 which meant….it was 6:17! I ran inside to go tell my dad but he was gone. A note was left on the table. I read it to myself.
Dear Kitty, I had to leave for work early today. I made your lunch.
I gave the note a dirty look. When I was waiting for the bus, I would draw. I don't know if I told you before but I love to draw. It's one of my favorite things to do. This is how it works: I see something outside of the window on the bus. Then I draw the landscape or building or animal or whatever. Then I use my imagination to think of what might be or what it is. Then I draw it.
I was looking out the window when I saw the big lake of Kat Haler. Which is Danish for cat tails. Oh, I forgot to tell you. I live in the town of Mos. I know that it's not a good name but it is a good way to explain the town. It used to be a Denmark town. Until the English took over. Then it all changed. They tried to restore the town but the people were gone.
Chapter Two: School Drool
The bell rang and a teacher named Miss Marsh, our English teacher came over and yelled at everyone to get to class.
My first subject is language class. You're probably wondering what language I learn, well this is it...Danish. Today we were learning about sports. I learned that: volleyball means volleyball, soccer means fodbold and weirdly enough we learned how to say pool table. It means a pool board. After Danish I had English, Math, Art, lunch, Phys ed, then Social Studies then GO HOME!
We have a Danish test tomorrow so I will review.
I have an animal Danish test. Dog: hund , Cat: kat, turtle: skildpadde, bird: fugl, cheetah: gepard and skunk: stinkdyr. Then I went on to my math homework. I started to get a little lazy and I drew a little elf guy and I imagined him to be all knowing with work and do all my homework.
Suddenly my dad came in “Guess what I found in the attic.”
and he put down the necklace I had found in the woods all those years ago. I gasped. “I remember this.”
“ Uh..midnight dove,e I have something to tell you..” my dad said in a casual voice
Chapter Three: Door In The Floor
“ I don't know how to phrase this Kitty.”
I knew he was serious. He called me by my real name.
“You know my girlfriend Annabell…” “What about her.”
I hate Annabelle. She is so frustrating and Julian, her son who is four.
“I sorta...proposed to her.” “ WHAT!?!”
“ If you just spend some time with her I'm sure-”my dad said but then I cut him off.
“I told you that no!”
I glared at my dad.
“I'm sorry I didn't tell you before. I did propose to her and she said yes. she will be able to help around the house and I love her.”
I just grumbled. my dad got up and walked away. I noticed the necklace laying next to me. I picked it up.
It looked exactly the same as it had done when I was three. I put it on. Suddenly the little elf guy I drew on the paper popped up. I screamed and my chair fell backward. I slowly got up again.
The guy said, “Hej jeg er lille elf fyr.”
I knew enough Danish to know that that was Danish but I did not know what that meant.
“Errr...English?” I said.
“Yes, I do speak English,” he said.
“Good..um can I ask two questions?”
“Yes.”
“Are you real and how are you real?”
“ Yes, I am real.”
“two: I am real because of that necklace and the door in the floor.”
he made a grab for the necklace.
“ Hey, that's mine!” I clutched the necklace in my palm” wait a second my necklace can make my drawings real or…”
I tried to say but he had climbed on me and was pulling my hair.” close enough. Now to give me it!” he said now clinging on to my nose.
”I'm not giving my necklace back!”I pulling him off. He went limp as I pulled him off with my four fingers and thumb.
“Worth a try,” he said.
“why do you want my necklace so much?” I asked.
“nothing,” he said in a simple voice.”
“what do you mean nothing?” I said.
“all I have is this shirt. So I pretty much have nothing I don't even have a name.” he said with a sigh.
then I asked “do you want a name?” he looked at me with a grumpy look and said
“sure… but it gotta be danish.”
“how about maple leaf!”I said and I racked my brain for the danish word then it hit me.
“Ahorn!” I said which meant maple.
“I like that.” he said in a calm voice. Then I remembered something so I opened my mouth but before I could say something he said
“you are probably going to ask me what the door in the floor is.” he said in a sorta fast voice.
“uh...yeah” I said sorta lamely.
“how did you-” I started to say but then he broke me off.
“know? You made me smart didn't you.” I thought for a second then said
“yes I did, but what is the door in the floor” he paused and then said
“I'll show you but you can't go in, ok?” I thought then said
“okay” he started hopping up the stairs I followed.
“why are we going to the attic,” I said, I've been in this town for ten years and I know where everything is in my house. We finally reached the door to the attic and we opened it there was a red door in the floor golden writings on it that said: Catrina's imagination. I stared at the door then said:
“Has this always been here?”
for some random reason, Ahorn looked at me like I was the stupidest person in the world.
“It moves...duh.”
“let's go in it!”I said Eagerly.
Chapter Four: The Story
“Du kan ikke! Husk dom ikke at!”
There was a pause.
“all I heard was: blah blah blah! Blah ba promised blah blah” He slapped himself. “sorry, when I get nervous I speak in Danish but that's not the point you promised not to go in.”
“But if it's my own mind I would be allowed to go in, right?”
Ahorn sighed then said
“let me tell you a story….once there was a man named Sind Omsorg. He lived back when the Danish people lived here, he had the necklace and it et the shadohorses on the blue moon and it took his wife and daughter.”
I looked at him in shock
“But I don't have shadohores in my head!”
But before he could answer I heard a rumble.
Chapter Five: The Other Six
Earthquake I thought but no it was“Klippe!”
“Ahorn, I knew you'd be here” answered a rumble of a voice.
“Klippe?!” I said staring out of the window there was the big rock monster walking closer. I ran downstairs and looked around luckily my dad had left to go back to work in the big town.
“He’s alive too?” I said very confusedly
“Everything you imagined is alive right now, ”Ahorn said smartly.
“Well, not everything. Just six of them.”
“Six?” I said.
Then suddenly we heard a lot of rumbling. This time it was five others not as big as Klippe but still as loud.
“Wow, some of these I barely remember, Onion man, Checky, Vampy Vampire” I took a breath” Safrey the flying Unicorn, Kelly the dancing cell phone and Klippe” I ended lamely
“You must get your sleep kitty, everyone spread the news I'll catch up soon,” said Ahorn
“You always say that Ahorn” Vampy said
Ahorn lead me into my bed but I wanted to follow them but before I could say so, I was asleep.
When I woke up I was so excited. I ran downstairs. My dad was staring out of the window dumbstruck. He was looking at Klippe who had accidentally sat on his car it looked like a hamburger. I decided I would try to use my necklace so I closed my eyes and imagined a wonderful car, big that drives by itself and then I said “wish.”
I peeked through my eyelids. Right next to me was a wonderful car just like the one I had imagined sleck and red. I pushed my dad to the car. The car drove him away. “Okay! So let's get started!” said Vampy.
“started on what?” I said.
“What we mean is you can make anything,” said Klippe.
“I did not think of it that way,” I exclaimed.
I looked around. Everyone that I saw yesterday night was there except.
“Wheres Ahorn?”
Suddenly Klippe looked uneasy.
“Oh him. I mean he had to go on a trip to do stuff..”
His voice faded on the last word.
“Well anyway, let's get started right” Klippe said while looking around, still uneasy.
Chapter Six: Shadohorse’s Return
I came home from school.
And tried to make myself a snack with my necklace.
“ something's blocking the image of my food.” After that, I just had some orange juice.
I got into bed and went to sleep. Then woke up sweaty at 12:34 am. I had felt something in my bed.
I got up and sprinted as fast as I could to my dad's room. I flung the door open and yelled
“DAD!!”
There was no answer. I ran upstairs looking. I went through every room in the house. He wasn't there. But when I got into my attic I heard a muffled “HELP!” I swirled around. No one was there. I thought it was my dad at first but this voice was higher. On my second spin, I saw him tied to the leg of a chair was…
“Ahorn?”
His mouth had been taped but he could manage a few words. I quickly bent down and took off the piece of tap on Ahorns mouth. He took a gasp of breath.
“Who did this to you?”
“Klippe and rest of the gang. I was going to warn you about the shadohores. I think they got scared of being sent back to the land of imagination. (the Denne Verden er beder.)” “But we must get going we must save your father!”
“But I don't know where they are or how to get rid of them!”
“Think I know where they are and how to get there, I believe you have a car?” said Ahorn. Ten minutes later. I got out of the car why I let him drive.he had hit a couple of trees on the way here
“Ahorn next I'm driving,”I said in a weary voice.
“no time to waste chop chop,” he said in a business-like voice. Then he strolled in like he owned the place. I walked in more slowly after him. It was a big room boarded up windows big and covered with dust. It used to be the town prison for the Danish people but I could not remember the word for prison. I’m the middle of the room. There was a big pole protruding from the ceiling. Tied to the pole were three people plus a guinea pig and they were asleep. There was dad looking dazed, Annabelle in her nightgown with a curling iron stuck in her hair and Julian with a binky in his mouth. I gasped. There surrounding them cycling around were the shadohorses about six of them, I took a step back but Ahorn gesture forward. I took a couple steps forwards then whispered, “How are we going to get them back?”
“ I can not help you on this, Kitty. We can not get too near them. Do what you think is best,”
Ahorn said.
“ I think I'll wing it.” I ran right out to the middle of the room where the pole was. A shadohorse ran at me. I ran at it but instead of hitting the hideous thing I went through it.
I felt like the sun would neither rise again and I remembered terrible things that made me miserable. Like when my mom died when I got lost and when I lost my dad. I heard a small voice from far away saying
“Kitty! Think positive! Your loving dad hugging you. Think that or think about your cute almost baby brother” It sounded like Ahorns voice. Wait, my dads not lost, he's still alive. I'll have a loving mom again and forget all the bad things I said before. I love them
“I love them.” what a nice phrase. I keep it in my mind then reached my eyes open. I grabbed a stone form of the ground and ran super fast to the pole and started hacking at the ropes tying them to it. At once all the shadohorses gilded towards me.
I was starting to feel miserable again but I thought,
“I love them, I love them.” They were drawing in closer to me.” Jeg elsker dem, I love them,” I thought the most positive thought of my dad happy and me happy and my new mom and brother happy. Then from my necklace came a burst of yellow. It circled around me and my Dad and Annabelle and Julian. I knew they could not touch me or their victims. The sun was starting to rise and the shadohorses were starting to disappear slowly and so were the victims. I hacked at the ropes really fast and finally, it broke free and they started to reappear and wake up
“What's wrong? Catirina, are you okay?” my Dad said in a feeble voice.
“its okay, dad. You need rest,” I said in a soothing voice.
“How are we going to get you guys home?” said Ahorn who was on my shoulder. As if it had heard the yellow orb that me my Dad and Annabelle and Julian had been standing in started moving in mid-air towards our houses.
“I've been a lousy daughter to my dad and you. I thought only of my feelings and not my dad’s. You make my dad happy and I should be happy for both of you, so I am,” I said to Annabelle.
“But I-” Annabell started.
“No buts. I'm not continuing this conversation”I said.
right when I got home that day I decided we should get rid of the necklace for good. I went up to my attic that day and to the door in the floor. I opened it. Turning away I through the necklace into the door it shouts and everything I made disappeared with a pop.
Chapter Seven: The Wedding
It had been three months then that occasion happened.
There was a big party with a big marble cake. I walked over to a table where a girl who looked my age was sitting looking lonely.
“May I sit here?” I asked.
“Sure,” the girl said.
“My name's Kitty. Do you want to be friends?” I asked.
“No one here has ever asked to be friends with me. I'm Audrey by the way,” said the girl.
I must have looked like I was thinking because Audrey said, “What are you thinking about?”
I took a breath and said, “My fantasi.”
She looked bewildered.
“It means imagination.”
