Chapter 1
First Day of High School
Itś the first day of highschool and I’m a wreck, I'm scared out of my mind to go to school. As I finish up my mascara I hear a honk!
Cat, my best friend since third grade, calls out, ¨Liv we’re gonna be late. Come on.¨
¨Coming, bossy,¨ I shout back. I go to the car and take my seat in the back where I've always sat ever since Jake, Cat’s brother, got his license last year.
¨So Liv, remember Sean? Rumor has it, he had a huge growth spurt this summer and has been working out ever since he joined the Bantam Hockey Team last year. I can’t wait to see him! I bet he’s hot!”
Jake grunts as if he’s trying not to laugh.
“What’s so funny”, Cat barks at Jake.
“Nothing, you’re just so boy crazy, you seem to forget I’m here and that I’m a boy.”
“You’re a boy? I hadn’t noticed!” Cat teases Jake.
As soon as Jake parks we run ahead anxiously but then we slow down trying to look cool. Jake catches up and the three of us walk in together. Jake quickly moves away once he sees all of his buddies. Cat and I keep moving through the halls trying to find our lockers. I finally find mine and it’s three lockers away from Cat’s.
After opening our lockers we compare our schedules. It turns out that we only have one class together. This is frustrating but at least it’s our first class of the day. It starts in less than five minutes.
On our way to our first class, which is social studies, we see a classmate from last year, Tina. She used to be this fun, chirpy person who now looks like she just came from a funeral and the person who died was her tattooist. Cat and I look at each other shocked.
The next person we see is Sean. I look over at Cat and she looks like she’s going to faint so I grab both her arms and shake her.
She snaps out of it and whispers in my ear, “Ooh la la!” At first I’m a little confused since she isn't looking in Sean’s direction anymore but then realize she’s staring at Chris, the cutest boy in our grade and he's walking our way. He walks right past us and stops at the locker right next to Cat’s!
Her wide eyes meet mine and our mouths drop open. Cat makes the funniest happy face I’ve have ever seen. It’s like she’s been eating sugary lemons. I make annoying buzzing sounds in her ear to snap her out of it. We then speed walk all the way to Social Studies. We know practically everyone in the room, but HIM. I had never seen him before but had a burning desire to get to know him. I found myself lost in his crystal blue eyes, as deep as the ocean and his black hair, as dark as coal. Makes me feel like nothing in the middle of nowhere.
Suddenly I’m brought back to reality when I feel Cat’s elbow hit my side. “OW!”
“Please take your seats ladies,” says Mr. Ross
MR. ROSS, I heard all about him from Jake. Everyone thinks that he is the worst. Time to find out for ourselves.
There are two seats left. One in the back and one behind mystery boy. Cat dashes to the back, sits down next to our longtime friend Brittany and proceeds to stick her tongue out at me. Real mature, I tell her by rolling my eyes as I take the seat behind mystery boy.
Class was different. It was not like middle school at all. Although I really wouldn’t know since I wasn’t paying attention to school work at all, I was paying more attention to the boy in front of me. After Mr. Ross called attendance, I learned that his name is ADAM. What a mysterious name. Oh my gosh, why am I so interested in Adam? I don’t even know him.
“Liv, remember that guy that you sit behind in social studies?” Cat asks as we leave the classroom.
“Yeah, why?”
“Turns out he moved all the way here from North Dakota,” replies Cat.
“Wow! How did you find out about that? Do you know anything else?”
“No, that’s all I know.
“I can ask Brittany if she knows anymore information. We have Biology together next.”
“Ok, I’m curious.”
It’s lunch and I haven't seen Cat or Adam since just after social studies.
“Liv! There you are,” I turn to see Cat walking toward me. “I found us a table.”
“Alright show me the way.” She leads me to the table where Brittany is waiting for us. Me and Cat sit down across from each other as Brittany says, “So, Cat, I found out more from Sarah..”
“Sarah? How does she know anything about Adam?” Cat asked.
“Oh, her boyfriend Toby told her about him.”
“ Ok, Adam and his mom moved in with his cousin after Adam's parents got a divorce.”
“Who’s his cousin?” me and Cat ask at the same time.
“You won't believe it, his cousin is CHRIS!”
“CHRIS!?”
That's when the bell rang and we all went to our next classes.
After school Cat, Brittany and I hang out at my house, playing board games and gossiping. My phone rings and Chris’s face appears on my phone. “Chris hasn’t called since we were on the basketball team together in elementary school when he needed a ride.” We all look at each other and shrug our shoulders.
“Answer it,” says Cat anxiously
“Hi Chris. What’s up?”
“Hi Liz. I’m calling to see if I can talk with Cat.”
My jaw drops. Chris is calling here asking for Cat?
After that phone call our lives were changed forever. Chris asked Cat out and now she is dating the cutest guy in our grade!
Chapter 2
Feeling Lonely
The next day is completely different. Cat and her brother bring me to school but Cat doesn’t walk in with me. She walks in with Chris who’s waiting for her at the entry way. I couldn't feel more lonely.
You’d think this would be like some awesome teen drama movie where that mystery guy would be my true love forever but no, he doesn’t even talk to me. I've decided to be best friends with Brittany now. It's just too bad I don't get to sit next to her instead, I’m stuck behind Adam.
At lunch me and Brittany are having a lot of fun talking about how we can hang out this weekend. I find it weird when Chris and Cat are talking about going to the movies and I have a feeling they're not just going to watch the movie.
“Hey Chris come sit with us,” offered Adam as he approached our table.
“Sorry guys not today,” Chris said to Adam and Sean.
“Why not?” persist Adam.
“Can’t you see I'm with my girlfriend?”
“So, how long is this one gonna last?” asks Adam as he sneers and makes eye contact with me. I get shivers all up and down my spine and look away as quickly as possible.
Chris scowls while Cat looks perplexed. Chris looks at Cat while giving her his hand and they both walk away. Chris looks very annoyed.
Adam and Sean laugh and sit down with us.
“So, Brittany and Liv, are you two busy tonight?” Sean asks with a wink.
“No. Why?” Brittany replies while taking a bite of her sandwich.
“Because we are going to open skate tonight after the Bantams practice.”
“We’ll check in with our parents,” says Brittany.
“Great! Then we might see you there,” says Sean with enthusiasm.
Adam smiles at me. I drop my eyes quickly my palms feel sweaty as I look up, they go back to their table.
Brittany’s dad dropped us off at my house after school. We hurry up finally up to my room and Brittany burst out, “ I felt so uncomfortable during lunch when Chris and Cat were getting gushy. I don’t think we should sit with them anymore.”
“I totally felt uncomfortable too but we can't diss Cat because she has a boyfriend.”
“You're right Liv, let's call her right now and make plans for tomorrow before Chris steals her away again.”
“That's a great idea Brittany.”
“Ring, ring” “Please leave a message at the beep.” “ Beeep”
“Hi Cat it's Liv. Me and Brittany here. We want to hang out tomorrow after school. Call me back, you know my number, bye.”
“Do you want to go skating tonight?” Brittany asks.
“Yeah,” I reply cheering up.
We run into my mom's office, “ Hey Mom, can me and Brittany please go skating tonight?” I ask.
“Yeah, It’s okay with me. Have you checked in with Brittany's dad?”
“Not yet.” says Brittany as she calls her dad. “Hey Dad may I please go skating tonight with Olivia?”
“Sure. Is Olivia’s mom ok with it?”
“Yes”
“Just be home by eight.”
“Ok, I will.”
“Don't we need to run to your house Brittany to grab your skates?” asked my mom.
“No I rent them.”
“After dinner my mom says “Ok then, let's go”.
When we got to the rink Adam and Sean were already on the ice. Me and Brittany quickly got on our skates and hopped on the ice. Sean whooped passed Brittany and smiled with Adam right behind. After about forty-five minutes of skating we all went in and got snacks from the snack shack. We were having so much fun until…
“Do you guys want to go outside for a drag?’ Adam asked.
“What?” Brittany asks.
“You know, take a hit from a cigarette?”
As my shoulders drop I look at Brittany and say, “I need to relieve myself. Brittany, will you join me?” “I’m so confused and disappointed,” I say as we enter the bathroom.
Brittany embraces me and says, “Well, we really don’t know him yet. Maybe he’s just trying to look cool.”
“I need to go home Brittany,” I say as I call my mom.
“So girls, how was your time skating?” my mom was asking as we were bringing Brittany home.
“Fine”, we both mumble at the same time.
“Bye Brittany, see you tomorrow.”
“Bye Liv”.
I proceed to my room without saying a word and as I sit down on my bed as my phone rings.
Ring, Ring. “Hi it's Cat”
“Hi Cat. Did you get my message?”
“Ya I did, but I already have plans tomorrow with Chris, sorry?”
“Ok bye.” I say as I think, this is the first time she’s ever blown me off. I really need her right now. I am so confused about how I feel about Adam. This year is so different without Cat always being here. Well at least I have Brittany.
Chapter 3
The Lake House
Today so far is horrible! Not because of last night at skating, but because Cat went to school with Chris and not me and Jake. I’m going to school with Jake alone which by the way is super awkward, because we never really talk. I really wanted to talk about last night with Cat. Thank goodness Brittany is waiting for me.
As Brittany notices the expression on my face she says, “My dad and I can bring you to school tomorrow if you want.”
“Yeah that would be great! Thanks. Hey, I am still pretty confused about my feelings for Adam. What if he talks to me?”
“Yeah, I have been thinking about you all night. I was thinking I would ask Sarah if she knows anymore about him and see if she mentions that he smokes. Is this okay with you?”
“Yeah, that’s a good idea.”
We almost got to Social Studies late. Adam is not here. I feel sense of relief and try to brush off this and my other feelings by thinking, I don’t really care.
At lunch Chris and Cat are already sitting at the table that Chris, Cat, Brittany and I usually sit at. I see Britney coming from the other side of the lunch room. She waves, smiles, gets her lunch and then runs over to sit next to me. “Oh my gosh, guys, my dad said that you (and pointed at me enthusiastically) and Cat can come to the lake house this weekend. We can go kayaking, swimming and hiking.” She looks over at Chris with a pouty face and says, “Sorry, Chris. Girls only! Dad’s orders.”
Without hesitation I announce, “I’m in.”
Cat looks down at her hands with a somber expression. She then looks up at Chris who nods and then at Brittany and I with a semi-smile and says, “I’m in too.”
“Mom?” I yell as I arrive home from school with Brittany.
“Liz, I’m in the laundry room,” Mom replies.
“Brittany and her dad have invited me and Cat to their lake house this
weekend. Can I go?”
“Yes Liz. That sounds like a lot of fun. I would like to talk with Brittany’s dad.”
“He’s waiting outside,” I explain.
While my mom goes outside to talk with Brittany’s dad we hit the kitchen and snack on hot chocolate chip cookies and milk. She returns moments later and and says everything is all set with her and I can go.
Today is the day. We are packing and heading up to Lake Champlain in Burlington, Vermont! Lake Champlain here we come! Yeah, the lake is two hundred and fifty miles from where we live in Queens, New York but I have never been to a lake house before so who cares.
Brittany’s dad drove me and Brittany to Cat’s house to pick her up but she wasn’t there. Her mom said that she went out with Chris.
“Is it okay if we go without her?” Brittany’s dad asks.
“No. Let’s find her,” me and Brittany say in unison.
Ring ring…. “Hey Cat, where are you?”
“I’m at lunch with Chris at Andrina’s, why?”
“We are here at your house to pick you up. Did you forget that today is the day we are going to the lake house?”
“No. I just lost track of time. Sorry!” replies Cat remorsefully.
“Okay we're coming to get you. We already have your packed bag.”
“Hurry up get in the car,” Brittany says in an annoyed tone.
Cat and Chris embrace briefly as Cat says goodbye.
Cat climbs in the back with me as she says, “Sorry again for losing track of time. Thank you for coming and getting me and not leaving without me!”
“Cat! Sorry isn’t enough. You have a boyfriend, good for you. We’ve been friends forever and now… You have left me in the dust.”
Cat’s eyes grow wide and she look, distraught and confused. “Liv, I’m truly sorry. How can I make it up to you?”
I smile and say, “Just give me a box of chocolates and twizzlers and will be good to go!”
All off us start laughing including Brittany’s dad. As we get closer to the lake house Brittany and I start teasing Cat about throwing her in the lake.
Once we got to the lake house. I got out of the car excited but way too exhausted and car sick to think about of pushing Cat into the lake.
Brittany shows us to the room where the three of us will be bunking. The room is so beautiful with its amazing view of the lake.
“Hey Brittany, what’s your wifi password?” Cat asks.
Brittany rattles it off, “best lh101.”
“Kay, got it,” Cat said.
Cat gasps. She is looking at her phone with the most horrific expression on her face. She slowly sits on one of the lower bunks and without a word passes her phone to me. There is a picture of Tina with Chris at the pool kissing behind Sarah taking a selfie. I show Brittany. Me and Brittany sit close to Cat trying to comfort her. We don’t know what to say. We all sit in silence for what feels like hours.
Cat wipes her tears, and says, “How could he do that to me?”
“I don’t know.” I say.
“He’s crazy to think that he can do that. Come on guys let’s do something fun that will help you get your mind off Chris!” Brittany says.
“Okay, I guess so. I hate boys.. Yes, let’s go have some fun! Thinking about this is too depressing,” says Cat.
Chapter 4
Sticking Together
“Wahooo!” Cat screams as she's falling from the rope swing. SPLASH! She hits the water and swims back to shore and squeals with utter delight. “I’m having the best time of my life. Thank you for being such great friends!!” Cat says. We go off the rope swings three more times. Then we grab the kayaks and start paddling over to the island in the middle of the lake.
When we get to the island Cat sits down heavy on a rock and says, “I’m having fun but I am still thinking of Chris and my heart is aching. I really liked Chris a lot. Ever since middle school. I don't know what to think or feel anymore.”
“Cat, I understand about having a broken heart,” I say.
“What?” Ask Cat
I tell Cat my feelings for Adam and what happened at the skating rink.
“I am so sorry that I wasn’t there for you! I don't know how I would get through this without you guys.” says Cat. “Are you okay? I was so caught up with Chris that I didn’t even notice my own best friend falling for a guy and getting hurt.”
“Well boys will come and go but the three of us will always be here for each other forever,” Brittany states.
We group hug and all recite together, “We will always be here for each other forever!”
“Sisters before Misters!” I announce.
