Prologue
For years there has been a rivalry between two groups. You are born to a group unless you are marked, by the way you were born. You will only get this mark if you are born at the same time as another person with the same bloodline. Some of these connected bloodlines go back centuries so you do not know if you are even related to them. In this case Kaily’s mother might have known but no one knew her name. Unlike in children’s fairy tales there are no “bad guys.” There is a leader on each side. The leaders job is to train all of those marked or being a child of the gods. The sides are not very large, some are made up of one or two people, while others can be made up of thousands of people. After some people give up their powers it is like they never had them. Maybe they are a bit less gullible but they have not grown because they do not remember their powers unless they are offered them again. With that said lets get to the story.
Chapter 1
Kaily
If I had known what I was being lead into I would have left and never come back, never even taken a second look...
My name is Kaily. I’m 11 years old. Im the kind of person that you might see and call me a beauty queen. I am not in fact I am more of a Tom girl. Enough of that, lets get to the story…
It all started on a warm summer day when I was getting ready to go backstage at a broadway show (my childhood dream) with my best friend Emily. When we got there it was hailing so we all rushed inside. The ticket man asked if we were there for the 12:00 show. So I told him why we were there.
“Oh yes of course how could I forget that pretty little face of a beautiful little girl like you… I-I mean oh yes our special ‘guests.’” said the man. The weird thing was he had winked after the word guests which made me think he was flirting with me. Little did I know that he was he not just him flirting, but giving me a warning, a warning that I had paid no mind to, a warning that would change my life forever.
You could imagine what happens from there. The ticket man takes our tickets, our parents left, and the man takes us backstage. Little did I know that following him was the biggest mistake in my life…
Chapter 2
Emily
Thank you for that warm introduction Kaily, but it is my turn to tell the story. My name is Emily and I am kind of the opposite of Kaily. You might call me someting like an oddball. Where did you leave off Kaily? Oh yes, the crazy part. So the man led us backstage and then he said when we came to a small pathway behind the curtain.
“only one at a time.” said the man. So I went first and basically walked right into Egypt.
I found myself in Egypt coughing and spitting out sand. And I was thinking it is just a matter of time before Kaily shows up, too, so I waited… and waited… and waited, but she never showed up. At that moment I knew this was not backstage, this was not just people rehearsing their lines. It was a whole different place. I have gone to Egypt every year (except last year) so I recognized the place most people would not, considering there were no ancient pyramids nearby. By this point in time you might think I am able to speak at least a small portion of modern standard Arabic but I cannot. Part of the reason I cannot speak it is because, one, I only go to Egypt to the other is my parents always are translating for me. This year, I was was going to visit Egypt but right before I was about to go my mother fell ill and my father and I could not leave her side until she got better.
Chapter 3
Kaily
Thank you for telling us about your troubles in a place you had at least been to before unlike me who just randomly popped up in Rome without knowing ANYTHING about the culture. By the way, the reason I had never been to Rome is because I had been abandoned at birth. I had learned this fact when I was three years old so you can guess what happened then. I threw the BIGGEST, I mean the BIGGEST tantrum anyone has thrown in thier life. So back to the point, I did not know where I was born, but once I got into the place that I had left as an infant, something told me that this was the place I was born. At last I was home.
I had the glory of finding out where I was born for approximately a second, before all the sadness and anger rose up through my veins all the way to my brain. I had never felt so mad in my life. I was infuriated with everyone. I was mad at my birth mother for leaving me, and I was mad at my new mom for NOT telling me where I was from. I was mad at my best friend for inviting me to the “show,” and most of all I was infuriated beyond belief at the ticket man. I cannot possibly put into words how mad I was at him. I am a nice person, at least I think I am, so as these various thoughts crossed my mind, I also felt guilty and sad about them. But little did I know this was just the beginning, just the start, of a life of darkness.
After I got the courage to look from my shoes, I saw a small boy on the streets. I saw him alone, wearing tattered clothes, and I felt bad for him. I checked if I had any money or food in my pockets. All I was able to find were a couple of pennies and a half eaten granola bar. As I found on this, my heart sank because I wanted to let other people have the wealth I did. In a split second I made the decision that giving these things to the boy was better than giving him nothing. As I approached the the young boy I found myself having second thoughts about even donating to the poor boy. When I made it to him I saw his fist rise and before I could react I was knocked out cold.
“Are you sure she is the one who we have been waiting for?”
“I am sure, sir.”
“Take her to the common room so when she wakes we can train her to kill mankind.”
“Yes, sir.”
As I woke, I heard this conversation taking place in a warm empty room. I was trapped, hopeless, and forgotten. As the thin tall man approached me, I knew that the only way out of this situation was to run and hide. I only had one shot. If I failed to escape who knows what they would have done to me. But if I succeeded I would be able to live freely. I was about to make my move when at a least dozen people charged in the room yelling. A person who looked like the leader said “hand over the girl or die.” In a sheep-like voice, the man that had been about to take me away said, “she’s all yours.” As the other men carried me away I could hear the man's master yelling at the poor man. As I listened to all of this I slowly drifted off to sleep.
Chapter 4
Emily
When you were about to start training to destroy the world with those two weird people, I was trying to save the world. After I had given up on waiting for Kaily, I dozed off unwillingly because of the warm air in Egypt. I still had no idea where I would stay, for I was too far away from my relatives, and I had no money. If I had known why I dozed off and what would happen next, I would have ran and swam all the way to America and never worshiped the gods that I worship today.
When I woke up I was in a large hallway with no one but an old man in tattered clothes turning his head in every direction like they do in the movies when something bad is about to happen. Once he saw I was awake he said we had to flee before I could even move another muscle. Before you ask why, I did not just punch him square in the face out of pure anger because I had somehow remembered him from last year as a man fighting someone else. I had seen him destroy many men with inhuman strength. Even though I knew we had to flee I did not want to leave a roof on top of my head. I did not want to leave because, for all I knew, if I left I would sleep outside until I got back home.
I was wise to go with the man, for he led me to a place with A.C. in the day and more heat in the night. Once we got to this place, I began training to save the world. He started off by giving me a necklace which I soon found out was an amulet. He told me to speak a command, the word water blazed in the air, but the result was a drop of water that fell on my head. After a couple attempts at that, the old man told me to get some rest and to meet up the next day. The next day he pressed his finger against my amulet and spoke a command. As he did I felt a bunch of energy surge through my veins. He told me to speak the water comand and the result was a wave of water hitting the old man. He said that I had done well and I should try fire. I had no choice so I said yes. After two months learning and practicing my new skill (spells) I was ready to participate in a battle.
Chapter 5
Kaily
[Danny, (Kaily’s Trainer)]
In the end the same training took place with me except after a month my trainer said, “time to find your lost friend”. At first I did not know what he meant. He must have seen the confusion on my face because he said the one you lost in Broadplace or somthing like that. Broadway I corrected. The reason he knew about the broadway business is because I told him about it. What else should I do? lie about it?
In the end we started just going through walls after we said, “Emily.” If I had to choose between going on a crowded train that would not stop over this particular means of transport, I would, without a doubt, choose the crowded train. We kept popping in on all the Emilys except the one we wanted to find. And let me tell you it is not pleasant popping in on Emilys in the bathrooms. [and there’s Emily saying I should get back to the story and for once I agree.]
So back to the point. I finally got to Emily. At first all I saw were her eyes and I was delighted. After my eyes were able to focus on her full body, I saw she was tied up. Without my realizing what I was doing I ran to Emily and shook her awake.
“Who is this? Have you came to save me? Bring me back home. Bring me to where I belong. Bring me to the cemetery.”
“NO! STOP! IT’S ME! EMILY!” I shook her some more but harder this time. Tears streamed down my face. I was shaking uncontrollably.
“Will she be okay?” I yelled at the top of my lungs at my trainer.
“I think so,” he said. As Emily opened her eyes once more a wave of relief washed over me. Her eyes were green and misty, she almost looked like a pledged seaotter.
“We have plunged into a new age,” said Emily right before she passed out.
Chapter 6
Emily
“Who am I?” I asked.
“Emily, don’t do this to me, PLEASE…” The rest of the conversation kept going on but it is to personal for me too tell you. [Now Kaily is saying it is only personal for me, but I wonder if she remembers the part when she told me about her troubles with the school toilet in second grade, because that was quite a story.] When I was finally able to remember almost everything that had gone on in my life, and I had a little bit of time to recover, I heard the deepest, loudest voice I had ever heard below…
“Little girl trying to save her friend from me, how cute.” After this comment I could basically see smoke coming out of Kaily’s ears.
“Hand back the girl or die!” bellowed the man. At that instant I knew who this man was. I remembered the part Kaily wasn’t able to tell me. He was the man who had trained me. He thought Kaily was bad. I remembered why I was tied up. I knew the reason was that he wanted to see if I could handle a situation that might happen later in my life.
“I will die,” said Kaily, running toward the man.
“NO! NO ONE IS GOING TO GET HURT! YOU TWO ARE BOTH ON THE SAME SIDE...”
“What?” Kaily and my trainer Dean said at the same time.
“You heard me correctly, SAME SIDE!”
“What”
“CLEAN YOUR EARS, SAME SIDE!” I needed them to understand, I was desperate okay? Before I could scream some more Kaily punched my trainer Dean square in the face. Like most people Dean’s reflexes came in and he summoned a fireball but as quick as lightning Kaily brought out a staff and deflected the fire.
“You are indeed on our enemies side. You may be friends with people in my tribe, but you are indeed on the enemies’ side.” Dean said to Kaily. “And you,” he pointed at the person accompanying Kaily, “we have met before.”
“Indeed.” the man replied.
“We have met in other battles, always against each other. Am I correct?” said Dean.
“I believe so,” said Kaily’s “sidekick”.
“And my side always won. Correct?” Dean said.
“Yes,” said the man truthfully, “every time but today.” I watched in horror as he wiped out his staff and engaged in battle with Dean. Fireballs missed me by inches. Water as fast as the Nile itself, flowed into my side.
However so surprising this was, nothing I mean nothing, could beat Kaily pulling a whistle and a machete out of her sleeve. As Kaily blew the whistle a blast of air flew through the room, stopping the commotion and drawing everyone’s attention to her. As everyone was staring at her in awe or in hatred, I was able to spot an army of everyone I had ever seen come in and join on Kaily’s side.
“Emmy I’m sorry to do this to you but you have to choose a side,” called Kaily.
“You fool, you cannot chose a side. You are born to a side!” yelled Dean.
“That is true, unless both of us are marked,” called back Kaily.
“No one has been marked since 1904,” Dean yelled back.
“Oh, you think that,” Kaily said as she pulled up her sleeve. “But you are wrong,” snapped Kaily, as a mark blazed on her arm.
“We were born in the direction where the sun will never shine, we are the reason for the new age. I watched in amazement when the same mark blazed on my arm in the same spot that it blazed on Kaily’s arm. That amazement soon turned to horror when Kaily conjured up a spell that hit Dean.
Six months later
Emily hasn’t talked to me since Dean died. She has just started hanging out with the new kid. I know I could make more friends than she could but I already chose her as my best friend. When I finally talked to her I had to tell her that the spell was intended to be a shield charm, but it turned out as a killing curse. I asked her if we could be friends sometime and all she said was:
“I just need time.”
Epilogue
In the end Emily and Kaily became friends again. After Emily forgave Kaily they decided to record and write a book about their travels. They soon gave up their powers to just be mortal. After they gave up their powers they started training for the olympics in rowing and won gold. If you are wondering if the rest of their life was a happily ever after the answer is no. They soon became only distant friends and all they cared about was fame. Although they split apart they are always wondering if the other is okay. Even though they are old now they have to make a big decision. They have to decide if they want their powers back.
