Unit 5-Global Health

As the world's population has shifted from nearly a billion at the beginning of the last century to a projected 7 billion in your lifetime we will turn our focus to global health. What are some of the largest contributors to the expanding human population and what are some of the biggest challenges to keeping the population healthy and stable? In this unit we will examine the health advances and challenges that still plague our development, consider the impact of culture on health, and evaluate how we respond to the new challenges created by nature and our own actions.5.1 Populations-Challenges and Changes5.2 Immunizations, Epidemics, and Pandemics5.3 Gender and the Developing World5.4 Disasters-Human and Natural Unit 5 Final Assessment Unit Website

It is your job to research, assess, and evaluate the response to a disaster of your choice. The event that you choose must be large enough to have been covered in national or international press and must be well-studied. Identify the weaknesses and structural problems that created vulnerabilities, examine what types of preparations were in place and those which were missing. Consider the successes in managing the disaster and the shortcoming within the system. Finally, analyze how the region, city, or institution affected has recovered and laid the groundwork for better responses in the future.
