Fried Chicken and Waffle Sandwich (Bourbon Molasses Glaze, Black Eyed Pea Spread, Crispy Jalapeños, on a Waffle)

Sides: Crispy Shoestring Fries

3.9/5 This week, I convinced Marlowe to forego the sandwich wheel spin and instead allow me to handpick the sandwich. Why? Because Friday was my 21st birthday and I've never had fried chicken and waffles before. So, I headed down to the Lower East Side to pick up 13 Fried Chicken and Waffle sandwiches from Sweet Chick, the "rustic" (i.e. hipster), "but modern" (overpriced) American comfort food spot co-founded by Nas. Without the seemingly anonymous sandwich wheel as a buffer in case this Sandwich Friday turned sour, I prayed that this fried chicken and waffle combo wouldn't be a flop. Lucky for me, it was pretty tasty! Or at least I thought so, as did Natalie and her whopping 4.9 rating. Others were less enthusiastic. Notably so was Ronan, who would have preferred a bread alternative to the waffles, Shannon, who was disappointed by the lack of syrup packages for this sandwich, Jackie, who thought the sandwich was "just average," and Marlowe, who apparently is on a one-man crusade against the use of white chicken breast. To be fair, there were definitely areas this sandwich could improve upon: the waffles were very soggy, it was far too small, and the black-eyed pea spread was utterly unnecessary. But, it was still very tasty; the chicken was nice and crispy, it was seasoned well, and the bourbon molasses glaze was delectable. Zoe, who has tried the sandwich on location before, said that though this one wasn't as good, the sandwich was still just as delicious as when she tried it fresh. And since I have yet to quote myself this entire summer, it seems only fitting I add in my own thoughts on the day of my birth: "Yes, it wasn't perfect, but I thoroughly enjoyed eating this sandwich and I was very sad when I finished."
