It was a very good Friday with a united Foothold staff till it was time to rate our sandwiches. Like the two sides of ‘The Force’, the room was split into the LODs (left of Daniel, Daniel included) and the RODs (right of Daniel). While which side of the force each side of Daniel is remains up for discussion, the divisive factor was certainly the love/lack of love of plantain.

Laying atop and below a mix of shredded meat, cheese, mayo and lettuce, were two thick layers of plantain that yielded a sensible, but debatable plantain to content ratio. Sensible because, structurally, it was the right amount of plantain, and debatable because of a craving to taste more meat within the whole mix.

Taking away the bias for the taste of plantain from both ‘Sides of Daniel’, the sandwich was pleasing to eat. The beef, pork and chicken blended so well with the cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo. These were all well cooked and mixed and the only complaint would be the lack of a provocative taste (sour, spicy, etc.). This was remedied by the addition of hot sauce by most people in the room to the sandwich. And for those who love plantains, it was another plus. Serving as top and bottom layers, each bite of the plantains, combined with the inner contents, was “just delicious” as Marlowe put it.

Despite the opposing sides of the force, the Three Meats Yoyo racked up 4.21 of 5 points. Stimulating both taste and thought, the sandwich also allowed us to leave the room thinking about “What is a sandwich?” (Thank you Jackie). For the LODs, we didn’t really care, we just wanted to join Alex in the park, with this sandwich, and with few napkins.
