Goal: using technology to make living things into products or new forms of life

Inputs: energy, knowledge, materials, money, people, time, tools

Processes: fermentation, selective breeding, crossbreeding, bioprocessing, genetic engineering

Outputs: intended – products or new or improved forms of life

unintended – resistant or mutated life forms, allergens inserted into foods, scrap, waste, pollution

Feedback: open-loop, closed-loop
