Video Game Design

Overview

The video game design project is constructed to be a fun, yet challenging design based project. Students use Scratch, a program developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for users ages 8 - 16. As the Scratch website states, "Scratch helps young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively — essential skills for life in the 21st century." Students will be tasked with creating and programming their own characters, backgrounds, and storyline. For a brief overview, watch the video below or visit the Scratch Website for more information.

The program is now online, but an offline version can be downloaded to your computer. The design brief and rubric are located below. The project will be challenging, so Mr. Curry and Mr. Longenecker have created some short examples that may be useful: ABMS Tech Ed Scratch Reference Programs.

The game below is an example of a Scratch game. This version of Arrow Archer is a "remix" by landmarkx of the original by 08jackt from the Scratch website. Students can see millions of games that have been uploaded to the Scratch website. Often users take an existing game and put their own spin on it or "remix" it. However, for the class project, games should be original (they may use someone else's concept, but all of the programming must be theirs).
