By default, when you do a Google search using Chrome, you'll see an "AI Overview" section before the search results with links to web pages. For various reasons, you may wish to do a search without this AI Overview (powered by Gemini, with its "Google's multimodal large language model.") Here's what a search typically looks like:
You can tell Google to not use Gemini when you do a particular search by adding a special parameter to the search URL (the address). And you can do that by creating a special "Site Search" in the Chrome Search Engine Settings. Once you do that, you can easily do searches that will not return AI-generated results. Here's how
At the very top-left of a Google Chrome page, you'll see a "vertical ellipses menu" which is three little dots arranged in a row. Click that to bring up a menu, then click "Settings."
Next, click "Search engine" in the left menu, then click "Manage search engines and site search" then click the "Add" button to add a new "Search site."
Fill in the following values:
Name: No AI Search
Shortcut: g
URL with %s in place of query: {google:baseURL}search?q=%s&udm=14
then click the blue "Add" button. You've created a new "site search" with a "shortcut."
To use this new search engine click in the search bar, and type, for example: g [space] biola university enrollment and then [Enter]
Typing the G (lowercase) then space activates the new search, and whatever you type after that will be searched with your new "site search." This new search just adds the &udm=14 parameter to the address, which tells Google to turn off the AI Overview for this search.
Add the Control-L (or Command-L on a Mac) key command for even faster searches. The Control-L / Command-L key command goes to the search/address box without clicking. Try typing this:
[Control-L] g [space] biola university enrollment [Enter] (or Command-L on a Mac)
If you want to do a search with AI Overview, just don't type the g [space] and it will do the default search.
You could make this new search the default, so you don't have to type g [space] each time. To do that, go back to the Site Search settings, find the new Site Search you made, click the vertical ellipses menu on the far right and choose "Make default."
Also: there's nothing special about using "G" as the shortcut. That's just what I use because it's easy to type. You could use other letters or combos if you like.
