Training Schedule

The Office of Digital Learning offers Canvas training sessions for faculty who are planning to teach online classes at some point in the future. Faculty who don't plan to teach online, but still want to learn to use Canvas for their on-campus classes or classes conducted remotely are welcome to attend.

Here is a summary of the kinds of training / sessions available:

TEOL 021 Self-Guided Canvas Course
"Pedagogy and Tools for Quality Remote Instruction "

This Self-Guided course is available to start any time. Use this link to enroll: https://canvas.biola.edu/enroll/BAMCBA

This is a self-directed online tutorial on "teaching remotely," which we distinguish from "teaching online." A fully online class is designed from the beginning to be online. Teaching "remotely" refers to classes that were initially meant to be in-person classes, but have had to be conducted remotely online due to the Coronavirus Pandemic of 2020. A key difference is that "fully online" courses are generally taught asynchronously, while "remote" classes are taught during the regular class time with the faculty member teaching live from the classroom while students attend remotely.

Instructional Design / Canvas Training – Two Hours

We offer this required training in a single two-hour session designed for people who will be teaching an already-existing online course. The session will cover the following topics:

Teaching Online Soon?

NOTE: Any faculty who intend to teach online, flipped, or blended courses are required to successfully complete at least this two-hour session before they are scheduled to teach their course at Biola University. Those who will be designing a new online course will need to work with an Instructional Designer to create the class and schedule recording of video content.

What Should I Bring?

For in-person sessions: bring a laptop you can use. These are hands-on sessions. For some sessions, it will be useful to bring some sample course content (syllabus, assignments, etc.). For session conducted online, we will use Zoom.

We also have an online class designed for instructors who will be creating a new online course. It's called "TEOL 101 - Preparing to Teach Online at Biola"

See this Sign-Up Page to register

Faculty are invited to learn how to teach a fully online course by experiencing a carefully designed, caringly facilitated online course from a student’s perspective. The Fall 2021 session of TEOL 101: Preparing to Teach Online at Biola University, a 4-week online course, begins on October 17 and runs through November 14.

TEOL 101 requires about five hours a week to complete. Completion of TEOL 101 (or the 2-hour Canvas workshop mentioned above) is required to teach a fully online course at Biola. For more information, see this article or contact Digital Learning.

One-Hour VoiceThread Workshop

Increase student engagement with VoiceThread, a digital slide deck with integrated tools to record narration and host conversation, available free to Biola faculty, students, and staff. VoiceThread is an asynchronous platform that lets faculty and students share media (slides, images, video, documents) as well as see and hear each other without needing to schedule any meetings.

A 1-hour workshop will demonstrate the functions of the VoiceThread website and app for mobile devices, and show examples of some main uses of VoiceThread:

Participants will practice adding slides and comments to a VoiceThread. Participants’ questions about integrating VoiceThread content and activities into online, remote, and residential classes will be fielded by a team of instructional designers.
