The user interface for finding group discussions changed slightly over Summer 2024. If you use group discussions, you can find students' posts by going to the discussion, then clicking the groups icon near the top-left of the page, then click on the group listed in the menu:
If you have a graded discussion that has been set up as a "Group Discussion," you should be able to view students' posts in the SpeedGrader if everything has been set up properly. Here's how to check.
First, go to "Discussions" then click on one of the discussion topics. Next, click the vertical ellipses menu near the top right (1) and then choose "Edit" from the menu (2):
In the settings for the discussion, verify that the correct "Group Set" is chosen. In this example, it's called "Discussion Groups." If you don't want to use groups, uncheck the box that says "This is a Group Discussion."
Next, verify that all the students have access by going to "People" then click on the "Discussion Groups" tab (or whatever your groups are named.) If there are "Unassigned Students," drag their names from that unassigned column into a group to the right.
Note: Once students start posting, it's too late to make changes to these discussion group settings. You'll need to make sure everything is set up correctly before students post any responses.
Can't see Student Posts in SpeedGrader?
If you are in SpeedGrader and you see a message that says "The submissions for this assignment are posts in the assignment's discussion. Below are the discussion posts for (Student Name), or you can view the full discussion," but don't see any posts, that means the student's posts are in the main discussion area in the main class, rather than in the student group. In that case, we recommend opening the SpeedGrader in one window and the discussion in another window so you can enter grades as you read the posts.
