Create a Graded VoiceThread Assignment
To create a VoiceThread assignment, the process is similar, go to Assignments and click the + (Add) button to create an assignment, and choose "More Options." Next, in Submission Type, choose "External Tool" and click "Find" and choose "VoiceThread" on the list.
Fill out the details of the assignment, like the name, due date, and points possible, and click Save & Publish to create it.
Next, you will need to set up the External Tool. Click on the assignment to open it up, then click "Edit Assignment Settings" and update the "Submission Type" section - Make sure it says "External Tool" and click on the "Find" button, scroll down and click on "VoiceThread" and click Select. We also recommend the "Load This Tool in a New Tab" option.
When you click on the link for the first time, it takes you to the VoiceThread site where you can set up the assignment by clicking on "Assignment Builder" and choosing one of three assignment types. Once you've set up the assignment, you can type a description and click the "Create Assignment" button.
The Assignment Builder section lets you create three different kinds of assignments:
- Submit a Comment - students are required to watch a VoiceThread then submit a minimum number of comments
- Create a VoiceThread - students are required to create their own VoiceThread
- Watch A VoiceThread - students are required to watch a minimum amount of a video
Choose one of those options, and when you've finished setting it up, you can fill out a description of the assignments then click the "Create Assignment" button.
For the Submit a Comment option, there are several options you can choose, that look like this:
Once students have started submitting their assignments, you can go back to the same assignment link, and you will see the the VoiceThread Grader:
For more details about using this Grader, see "#4 Grading Student Work" on the VoiceThread instructions for Canvas. Enter grades out of 100, this will be scaled to the points possible you chose for the assignment, and your scores will appear in your Canvas Gradebook.
Students should find the process fairly self-explanatory, but if you want to give them instructions, refer them to these Submitting VoiceThread Assignments instructions.
