Reconfiguring VoiceThread Assignments

When Do I Need to Reconfigure a VT Assignment?

When you copy a class on Canvas from one semester to another or from one section to another, you may need to update your VoiceThread assignments in the new class. A "course copy" only copies the Canvas portion of the assignment, and you will need to "reconfigure" the connected VoiceThread link. This page describes how.

After the assignment (or the whole course) has been copied to a new Canvas course, you can check to see if the VoiceThread needs to be reconfigured. Click on the assignment, and if it looks like this, then it does need to be reconfigured:

How to Reconfigure the Assignment

Start by clicking the "Assignment Builder" button:

Next, you'll see several options. Generally, you'll just want to use the same option that you had for the assignment in the previous class. The most common choice is "Comment" which is an assignment that generally consists of a pre-existing VoiceThread and students will be required to add to it and comment. Click on "Comment," then click on "Continue" at the bottom of the screen to proceed:

On the next screen, choose a VoiceThread. Generally, you'll just select the same one used previously, but you can also click "Create a new VoiceThread" if you'll be using something different for the new semester.

Then click "Continue."

On the next screen, you'll see a preview of the the slides. If you want to add additional slides/media or want to rearrange the slides of your VoiceThread you may that here. Once you are satisfied with the VoiceThread, click on "Continue" to proceed.

On the next screen, you'll see a different view of that same VoiceThread – what it looks like in the app. Here again you can add more slides or media. Click "Continue."

Next, you'll see several options for the assignment. Here are the most common settings:

Note: You can turn on the “Enable Comment Moderation” option if you want to keep students’ answers hidden from each other. (For example, if you’re using the assignments as a kind of quiz or exam.) With this option on, students won’t be able to see others’ comments unless you specifically release (“moderate”) those comments.

Click "Continue."

The final step requires setting "Assignment name," the "Assignment instructions," the Submission Message, the Start date and End date for the assignment and choosing the option about whether to allow students to resubmit the assignment.

When you're done, click "Publish" at the bottom:

That's it! You can verify that the assignment is set up on Canvas by going to the assignment and you should see something like this:
