The Impact of Cheating in Sport

Walt: synthesise information from multiple texts.

Walt: understand why people make particular choices and how their choice can impact themselves and others.

Key Concepts:

What might cheating look like at the Olympics and who may it impact?

What motivates an athlete to cheat?

Instructions:

1. Read through any extended texts from the last three weeks which you want to spend more time exploring. These will be texts from:

  • The story of anti-doping

  • Swimmer Natalie Coughlin

  • The impact of cheating in sport

2. Use the information you have learned to respond to at least 2 of your classmates blogposts from week 4, 5, and 6.

  • Go to the blog log and read a number of your classmates' posts from weeks 4, 5, and 6.

  • Use this doc to write your blog comment and then copy your response into the comments section of their blog post.

  • Use the 'Quality blog Comments' image on the right to help you!

The Kayaking Trip

Walt: write a narrative

Walt: demonstrate understanding of a number of strategies and skills for writing (for example, use of paragraphs, a range of sentence types, descriptive language, punctuation, spelling).

Instructions:

1. This week, you are going to write a narrative of your own. You will only be given an overall theme of your story.

2. You will need to:

  • Create your own plan

  • Think about how you are going to:

    • Develop the orientation (characters and setting)

    • Develop and solve the problem

    • Link your ideas and make your writing interesting

3. Make a copy of the Planning and Writing doc and put this into yourwriting folder.

4. Follow the instructions on the planning and writing doc.

The life of Usain Bolt

Walt: engage our audience by using interesting vocabulary and language features.

Walt: confidently write in narrative form.

Instructions:

1. This week, we are going to be writing a narrative (story) explaining the life of Usain Bolt.

2. Watch the two videos which explain the life of Usain Bolt.

3. Make a copy of the Planning and Writing doc and put this into your writing folder.

4. Plan your narrative in the Planning and Writing Doc. As you plan, work through the Language Features presentation.

4. Write your narrative.

  • Come up with your own creative title.

  • You could start your story with "Once upon a time..." or you may choose your own way to start the story.

  • Think about possible language features you could use (see the Language Features presentation to help you).

Rio Olympics 2016 Explanation

Walt: write an effective explanation about why technology can be considered a performance-enhancing drug

Walt: understand multiple perspectives and write with these in mind

Instructions:

1. This week were are going to be explaining why technology can be considered a performance enhancing drug. You need to be thinking about the arguments against the use of technology in competitive sport and it’s affect on results, the athletes themselves and the countries that they represent.

2. Firstly, open and make a copy of the planning and writing doc. File this into your writing folder.

3. We are going to talk through the process of writing an explanation - what is included, features you need to have and how you can captivate your audience.

4. Fill out the planning table with your ideas, making sure you work with a buddy to help come up with some brilliant ideas.

5. Once you have finished, share this on your blog with the WALTs from the top of this page.

If I were at the Olympics

Walt: collate and synthesise information into our own words

Walt: write from the perspective of another person

Instructions:

1. This week you are going to be writing from the perspective of an athlete at this year's Olympic games. You are going to have to imagine what it's like to be at the Olympics and why it is so special.

2. Firstly, open and make a copy of the planning and writing doc. File this into your writing folder.

3. Watch the YouTube clips to give you ideas of what to write.

4. Fill out the planning table with your ideas, making sure to put down all your ideas.

5. Once you have finished, share this on your blog with the WALTs at the top of this page.

Shoes of the Olympics

Walt: write effectively for a particular audience and purpose.

Walt: express our ideas clearly and thoughtfully.

Walt: compare (and contrast) successful Olympic shoes over almost 90 years, looking at how and why technology changed over time.

Instructions:

1. Read the texts (from your reading page) to gather information and ideas.

2. As you read, start adding ideas to the planning section of the advice column slides.

3. Do you need further information? Ask Miss West or Mr Somerville and we will help you out!

4. Gemma wants to start competitive sprinting but she needs your help! Create a response to Gemma's post, giving her advice on what she should be looking for in running shoes, and how shoe technology changes over time.
