Walt: read a graphic novel

Instructions:

1. Complete this google drawing about 'The parts of a graphic novel'.

2. Read the first page of the graphic novel carefully. While reading, complete the YELLOW sections of this google drawing (matching task) and then compare your answers with your classmates.

3. Read the rest of the graphic novel carefully. Complete the PURPLE sections of the google drawing as you read.

4. Once you have finished reading, you are going to create your own review of the graphic novel. Use this presentation to create your review and post it on your blog.

Use this review, of the film Finding Nemo, to help you.

6. Read the text, 'China and New Zealand share long-term bond'. Create a google map using these instructions. Add markers to the locations mentioned in the text as you read. For each marker, write a brief description of what happened here.

7. Post your google map onto your blog with a description of the task and what your learned.

Getting to know a comic artist

Instructions:

1. Read your text carefully

2. Find the meaning of any words which you do not understand.

3. Contribute to the padlet, to share your ideas on the following:

What are some important factors which an illustrator/ comic artist needs to consider in order to be successful?

4. In a group, create a poster for your classmates using ideas from the texts on Gus Hunter (last week) and Paul Martin (this week), which will help them with ways to improve their illustrating skills.

As a group, decide whether you are going to create the poster by hand or on the computer. Think about the following:

  • Your audience

  • How much writing are you going to have on it?

  • Are you going to create some artwork on it to engage your audience?

  • Is it going to have a comic art theme or illustrating in general?

  • How is everyone in the group going to contribute to this project?

  • Is there anything else which you feel could be useful to find out before creating the poster?

1. Read your story carefully

2. This week we are finishing off our 'Fab Four' super heroes. Sketching by hand (using a range of coloured pencils), finish off the last two heroes - a clarifier and a summariser. Upload a photo of your art onto this presentation.

NOTE: a hint as to the superpower each superhero will have can be found in the presentation!

Write a sentence or two, explaining what your superhero does.

3. Once you have uploaded photos of your artwork for the four superheroes, embed the presentation onto your blog with an explanation of the task.

Boy Soldiers

Harry's War

Walt: use our prior knowledge to gain a deeper understanding of a text and specific vocabulary.

Instructions:

1. Read your story carefully.

2. If you come across words or phrases you don't understand, use the visual cues (illustrations) as well as other words which you do know and prior knowledge of the topic to problem solve. Come to our group discussion prepared to share ideas and help each other out!

3. Using the text, create a short letter from Harry to Ted. In this letter, Harry is going to tell Ted that the war is over. Go to the writing doc here.

Think about:

  • How Harry feels at this moment in time.

  • How Harry believes the other soldiers feel at this moment in time.

  • What Harry misses the most about home.

  • What Harry is least looking forward to on the trip home.
