Archive or mute Gmail conversations

If you are new to Conversation Mode in Gmail, here are some tips to clean your inbox and remove email conversation threads without fear of losing anything.

To clean up your inbox without deleting your emails, you can archive or mute them. Your emails are moved to a label called "All Mail."

Archive an email

Near the top of the page, click Archive .

Tip: If keyboard shortcuts are turned on, you can also press e to archive an email you're looking at.

Mute or ignore messages

In the top right, click More  Mute.

Tip: To mute more quickly, use the keyboard shortcut m.

Copying your email signature from Outlook to Google

Here are some tips for copying your email signature from Outlook to GMail.

If you try to copy directly from the settings in Outlook where your Signature is shown, the formatting is lost.  So it is best to copy direct from a mail already sent.

Simply go into one of your sent emails in Outlook and copy the entire signature

Then in Gmail go to Settings->General->Signature and paste.

 

 

By selecting a mail in Sent Items in Outlook, and then copying the mail signature directly from the mail itself, this can be pasted into the Gmail signature settings and the format is kept.

Remember to change the actual email address on the signature in Gmail to the new format in Google.

Archive in Gmail

Archive, in Gmail, only means that you remove the "Inbox" label.  

The messages really haven't been moved anywhere.  You can find them by using search, browsing any personal labels you may have applied or by browsing through "All mail."

By choosing "All Mail" on the left navigation in Gmail (it is under "More", where you would also find your "Spam" folder), you will see all of your mail.  Those emails in your inbox will show with an Inbox label.

You could also use a search query to view only your Archived emails.  In the search bar, type or paste this query:  has:nouserlabels -in:Sent -in:Chat -in:Draft -in:Inbox

If this is something you want to refer to often, you could also add a Quick Link while you're on the search results page, and name it "Archived Only", say.  In future you would merely need to click on the new link in order to view only archived emails.

And of course, the shortcut to access all the above is: from textfields and textboxes, right-click > Language settings.

The Custom Spelling Dictionary.

To disable the spell checking, go to the Spellcheck Context menu and uncheck Check the spelling of text fields.

Finally, the Spellcheck context-menu also has a check option for "Ask Google for suggestions", which controls whether internet transfer will be used to get Google spell-correcting suggestions.
