This is my story based on the book Grace by Morris Gleitzman.
Here is the link to the first chapter of Grace if you want to read more.
It’s a beautiful day to play. I kick the ball to Hazle she kicks it back to me.
I kick this one up, up, up into the sky. And then it goes down, down low.
“A RAINBOW!” Hazle screams, pointing over the house.
I turn around to look but when I look back at the ball. It’s GONE!
I ask Hazle. “ Do you know where the ball went? ”
“ I. I. I think it went over there. ” Hazle replies, now pointing next door.
“ Me will get it! ” I say loudly.
I walk through over to their yard. I can smell something amazing!
It’s a barbeque! Is that a sausage? I walk through their yard and it’s a party! I want to join in so I start dancing with everyone.
“ WHO ARE YOU? ” A random man yells looking strangely at me.
He doesn't seem very nice, I cross my arms at him.
I notice a girl walking towards me holding my ball, she excitedly says.
‘ I think this is yours. My name is Grace by the way. ’
The mean man grabs my friend by her hand and takes her inside. Away from me! Everyone else follows them inside leaving their party behind. The man who is working on the sausages stays and gives me a smile, he seems nice. I think that man doesn’t like me. Tears start to drop down my face, I wipe them away because I’m a big girl now! Grace waves to me through a window but the mean man quickly closes the blinds.
Hazle sprints towards me screaming. ‘ YOUR MUMMY’S COMING! ’
What do I do? I really want to play with Grace but mummy will be mad! Mum starts stomping around the corner, she just looks at me. It looks like her eyes are gonna fall out of her face!
‘ ROSIE LEE SMITH! ’ Mummy screams. ‘ WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE YOU DOING HERE? ’
‘ Umm. Umm. Just, just. Getting my ball. ‘ I utter.
Why is she being so mean? I’ve been a good girl! While im walking back to my house I think about asking to stay at Grace’s. I’m going to sneak to her house tonight! I start to pack my bag with Ellie the elephant, my pillow and my very, very, very special blanket…

Each morning, I go through the same routine of getting dressed, doing my chores and heading off to school. I don't have the luxury of picking out a cool outfit that shows my personality to show my friends. The uniform policy leaves no room for personal expression or creativity. This is why we need to change this dreadful uniform policy!
There's a huge barrier between uniforms and personality, uniforms make everyone the exact same. It’s proven that not wearing something you’re happy and comfortable wearing can cause stress. Everyone is so excited about camp because they get to choose their own stylish outfits, unlike normal school days. At school we’re always told ”be yourself” but are you really being yourself if you have to wear a highly outdated uniform? Some might say if Kevin wears a Gucci top and Tommy wears a Kmart top then Kevin would bully him. It’s a privilege to wear free dress, students wouldn’t want to ruin that by bullying others.
School uniforms are costly and just wasteful! In primary school everyone is still growing and there's no point in parents paying $50 shirts just to be ruined by dirt, mud, grass, food etc. Not to mention how ugly they are. I’ve had to wear these disgusting uniforms for around 5 years. It hasn't been fun spending 6 hours each day wearing them. They have a weird texture with the school logo like the school owns us!
All teachers say it would be distracting what others are wearing, but kids wouldn’t want to ruin their snazzy outfits by dirt and other messy stuff. If teachers wear free dress, why can’t students? I thought everyone was equal. If this is the case it’s unfair and hypocritical! There is no scientist who has really proven uniforms help students. As a student I've noticed that drop earrings or really cool huge earrings don’t affect others. We can’t even wear nail polish, that’s pretty annoying. Teachers aren’t even strict with uniform policy, what’s the point?
If you want students to feel safe and happy at school, why have a dress code this outdated? Feeling safe and happy at school is a part of our motto and if you’re forcing kids to wear something they don’t even like. This is why we should not have a school dress code.
For individuality.
For personal expression.
For students' sanity.
