Our Year
The Wilton football team is back and they’re ready to cause some ruckus throughout the state. The team returns with almost all of it’s starters, only losing five seniors from the previous season. Wilton is returning two captains: Quarterback Drew Keith and Linebacker Owen Milder. The team added four more captains this season; Safety Jordan Duesenberry, Runningback Owen Hassell, Wide Receiver Cade Souhrada and Linemen Carter Drake-Metzger.
The Wilton Beavers have been working hard during their off-season to prepare for the up-and-coming 2024 season. During the summer, the team met early in the morning three days a week to weightlift and skill positions on offense and defense had 7-on-7 practices multiple times a week. The 7-on-7 practices significantly contributed to focusing the players' minds as they began to learn plays and positionings. Football camp this year was moved ahead by a week, and the Beavers welcomed the early arrival of camp. They jumped right in with positive attitudes and everyone gave it their all by busting their humps. Everyone worked together and made sure to push each other to ensure that every player showed improvement.
As the regular practices started, they began getting prepared for their upcoming game against a very talented Mid-Prairie team. Last year's matchup between these two teams was a battle with the Beavers coming out ahead with a 13-0 win. It was a hard-fought game, filled with intensity and grit. This year, the Golden Hawks will head to Wilton to try and upset the Beavers on their home turf.
As mentioned above, last year’s game was hard-fought, and nothing changed for this season. The night began with the JV playing before the varsity. Their game ended up coming down to the wire with the Golden Hawks coming through late in the 4th quarter to score a touchdown and win the game.
By the time the varsity game was about to begin you could sense the vibes and anticipation were high for both teams. The Beavers were the first to score, but the Golden Hawks scored two touchdowns before halftime heading into the locker rooms with a score of 7 to 14. When the Beavers took the field for the start of the second half it was obvious they were even more ready to play; more so than they were at kickoff.
The Beavers scored another touchdown but missed the 2-point conversion leaving them trailing Mid-Prairie 13 to 14. The Beavers' defense was amped and ready to do some work by keeping the Golden Hawks from scoring a single point during the second half. Wilton would go on to score one more time bringing the score to 19 to 14. The Beavers' defense worked together and stopped the Golden Hawks for the final drive of the game returning the ball to the offense and letting them take their victory formation.
As the Beavers prepare for the remainder of the season, you can see them in action @ West Liberty, @ Home vs Camanche, @ Beckman Catholic, @ Home vs Durant, @ Home vs Cascade, @ West Branch, and @ Regina. Please consider coming out to show your support for your local Wilton Beavers this football season, as these young men leave it all on the field each and every game and strive to make history for this program.
