Wrestling Girls Making History & Going to State
High school girls wrestling was sanctioned in the 2022-23 school year. The Wilton girls team has only grown from there. The team had a record high of 22 girls out for wrestling in the 2024-25 season. There were many new additions to the team including freshman, new students, and girls who decided to give wrestling a shot.
The team won their first ever tournament with team points in Central Dewitt. This was the first time in the three years that girls wrestling has been sanctioned that the Wilton Girls Wrestling team won by team points. Part of this success is that the team had a close to full roster, but injuries, illness, and other factors have prevented them from completing the roster.
Wilton sent two girls to IGHSAU state wrestling. These girls were Kaydence Boorn and Audrey Cummings. These girls both put in countless effort inside and outside of the wrestling room. They both wrestle in wrestling clubs including Big Game Wrestling Club and Pack 732. Their hard work and dedication was shown at the state tournament where they were both very successful.
This was Audrey’s first year competing at state. Audrey is a 100 pound junior, she has been wrestling for 3 years and was part of the first girls wrestling team. But came up short both of the other years. This year she took second at regionals securing her spot in the state tournament. She lost in the championship to Helscher of Wapello, who ended up being a state runner-up.
Audrey started her state tournament off strong by pinning the 9 seed from Midland in 3 minutes and 4 seconds. In her second match, Audrey wrestled well but lost by major decision 13-2 to the 1 seed Chloe Sheffield. Audrey then started to work her way back up on the consolation side of the bracket. She won two matches in a row by fall against Koda Fogg of Tipton and Molly Conechne of Central Lyon. Audrey lost her next match in overtime 2-0 and went on to wrestle for 5th. She wrestled a tough 5th place match and got 6th place in the state tournament.
Kaydence is a senior wrestler at 130 pounds. This was Kaydences third appearance in the state tournament in 3 years. Placing 8th her first year and 5th her second year. She had an undefeated record going into state and was ranked high all season. She also was the first Wilton girl wrestler to get 100 career wins.
Kaydence was the 1 seed in the state tournament and pinned her first opponent in the beginning of the second period. She also pinned her next opponent, Ashley Farrier of Mid Prairie in 5 minutes and 45 seconds. In the semifinals, she fell to Miley Kirkpatrick of Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont. Kaydence began to work her way up on the backside by pinning Buffom from Logan Magnolia. Kaydence wrestled against Lyni Gusick of Alburnett and pinned her in the third period to confirm her place at 3rd.
The girls wrestling team competed very well all season and has many accomplishments to be proud of.
