On January 18th, a group of students joined Mrs. Nicole Miller at the RVC Speech Competition at Mid-Prairie High School in Wellman, Iowa.
You may ask, what is a speech contest? Well, a speech contest is where students from the RVC Conference come together to showcase their talents in events such as Radio Broadcast, Musical Theater, One Act Plays, Impromptu Speaking, Mime, and many others!
The events the Wilton students took place in were two different Radio Broadcasts, Musical Theater, and Ensemble Acting.
The first Radio Broadcast was called “Oz”. It was created by Kiley Crawford, Lydia Shugar, Keltin Yant, Kyla Milder, Taylor Cottrell, and Oaklan Jirak. This Broadcast focused on all news that had to do with the Wizard of Oz as well as Wicked. The event received a Division I rating.
The second Broadcast was called “Abba News”. It was created by Lela Glover, Amber Oien, Bella Fulton, Kiersten Zaier, and Ian Hartsch. In “Abba News”, the students covered the rumors of a third Mamma Mia movie and who could possibly perform as Sophie's daughter in the rumored movie. Of course, with Mamma Mia puns mixed in! This group also received a Division 1 rating.
To follow the Mamma Mia theme, the next event performed was Musical Theater, where Lela Glover and Grayson Hartung performed “S.O.S” from the Broadway musical. They received a Division II rating.
The final event was Ensemble Acting, performed by Ian Hartsch and Grayson Hartung. They created a comedy skit of a DMV worker, a man named James Agnes, and an expired license. They definitely did their research because the skit was spot on, earning them another Division I rating!
The next step for this batch of students is heading to Large Group on Saturday the 25th of January. If they receive a Division I rating again in a large group, they have the opportunity to go to State!
