Media Arts & Sciences and Environmental Studies major
I’m Jocelyn Yu, a senior at Wellesley College majoring in Environmental Studies and Media Arts and Sciences. My artworks have been influenced by my experience living in Beijing, China, Vancouver, Canada, and my current life in Boston. These landscapes and cultures have infused my work with a jumpy perspective on nature. My art explores the environment in two ways: the external world of nature and sustainability and the internal world of individual and community environments. Each piece I create intertwines the essence of natural beauty with the human environment, acting as a bridge between the outward natural world and the inward personal experience. I strive to create pieces that are conversation starters, a plea for reflection, and responsible stewardship of our planet.

In this print, I explore the passage of time and the shifting dynamics of family through the lens of a shared space. The image captures two distinct moments, both set on the same couch and the same background in the apartment I grew up in. As I’m grappling with the imminent loss of my grandmother to cancer, this college reflects my journey of realization and acceptance. Through this print, I seek to evoke a sense of introspection and contemplation on themes of mortality, familial bonds, and the transient nature of life.
