“The Craze”

Purple craze. The craze. It’s the identity of our school. It’s the identity of our student body. We are purple craze. One big group of students coming together to create the best student section in Wake County. Wanting to learn more about this club of almost 300 students, I talked with Rachel Williford, one of the purple craze co-presidents. She and Parker Scanlon, both seniors, are the front-runners of this club who help to make everything run smoothly.
According to Rachel, Purple Craze is an important part of HSHS and is something that brings the whole student body together. The club participates in any school event you can think of, including all sporting events and fine arts performances. Additionally, members can be seen participating in spirit week, attending and advocating for other clubs, and striving to make school more enjoyable for everyone. “Purple Craze is an important part of Holly Springs High School, because we not only bring everyone together, but by attending all different types of school events, we are showing our appreciation for all the amazing talents that the students of HSHS bring to the table. From attending football games, to supporting the arts programs, it shows those individuals that they are appreciated.”
It seems as though Rachel is the perfect candidate for co-president, seeing as she has been a part of Purple Craze since her freshman year when the club was created. Rachel has been able to watch the club grow over the years and wanted to encourage others to get involved and support the school, which was the main reason why she decided to run for co-president. When asked what her hopes were for this school year regarding Purple Craze, Rachel simply said that she wishes our student body never loses its school spirit. “After such a weird two years of online school because of Covid, I hope that everyone can make the most out of this year. I hope that this year, everyone will allow themselves to let loose and just enjoy this time when we finally can return to a somewhat normal high school life.”
Looking at the future of Purple Craze, Rachel believes that this club can spread into a school-wide organization where every student participates and hopes that it will reach the point where it is a given that everyone who attends HSHS is part of the group.
Wrapping up her thoughts, Rachel once again stated that she firmly believes Purple Craze brings the whole student body together: “With all the craziness in our world, I think it’s really important that everyone has a place where they feel they belong. Purple Craze makes sure that everyone feels welcome and appreciated at whatever event we attend, and I so appreciate seeing everyone come together because of the love we all share for our awesome school.” You heard her, Hawks; Purple Craze is the place for you.
