“Lady Hawks Soccer” by Maria Guta
Your Lady Hawks are 1st in the SWAC as of Sunday, April 17. They have built a name for themselves so far this season, going 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the conference, conceding both times to Middle Creek. The team is on a 3-game winning streak against tough opponents Apex, Apex Friendship, and Cary.
With the graduation of several talented strikers last year, the team had big roles to fill. This season, the ladies have worked for each other, proving the efficiency of their versatile attack. Ten different players have scored this season, many of them underclassmen. Sophomore Sydney Cummings leads the Hawks with six goals, followed by sophomore Kayla Wallis with five. The defense also anchors the team’s success. The ladies have five shutouts in nine conference games, thanks to a strong back line and talented keeper Sam Michael.
The team celebrates four senior graduates this year. All have been active members of the Holly Springs soccer community, playing club soccer at Wake FC as well as at school. Emily Cancro and Maria Guta have been part of the program for all four years, while Genesis Lara and Ava Langaker have played for three years. Senior Genesis Lara, center-back turned striker, has committed to play Division 1 soccer at Gardner-Webb University in the fall. We wish her all the best!
Be sure to come out and support the ladies this week and next as they face talented teams in the neck-and-neck battle for the SWAC title. They play Green Hope on Wednesday the 20th away this week. Starting on Monday the 25th, they face Apex at home, followed by Panther Creek on Wednesday the 27th at home, and Apex Friendship (2nd in the conference) away on Thursday the 28th. These are the last conference games of the season before the Wake County Cup in early May and then State playoffs. Go Hawks! #WingsUp
