“Men’s Basketball” by Maria Guta
You may have heard about the small but mighty men’s basketball team in the headlines recently. They are the talk of the school, all over Twitter, and the cause of the deafening noise coming from the gym a few times a week. The men are 19-3 overall and 10-2 in conference, with an astounding 14-game winning streak. The team is ranked 5th in the 4A East, 2nd in Wake County, and 39th in the state. In conference play, they are tied at 10-2 with Friendship and Panther Creek, going into the final week of conference play.
Even more incredible than their record is the team’s work rate. Each player–-from freshmen to seniors-–brings extraordinary energy to the court, making for great games for the student section. The team’s top scorers are junior Colin Khul, junior Micah Jones, junior Houston Wills, sophomore Ryan Crotty, and senior Jordan Kearney.
According to Coach Hepp, the team’s success should be attributed to the dedication of seniors Jordan Kearney, Ben Gruden, and Jake Fields, each key in their respective offensive and defensive roles. I asked a few players what they thought contributed most to the team’s success this season. Jake said, “Chemistry, because we play for each other,” while Jordan attributed it to “great defense.” Merrick Cranford praised the team’s “passion for the game and teamwork.” Each of these things is plain by the legacy the team has created this season. Be sure to come out and support the team on Friday the 11th vs. Panther Creek! The game is at home.
