“Ms. Aguirre: Doing it all” By:Avery Freyer
Teachers are an intricate part of the school system. Most teachers teach one or two subjects, but there is one teacher who loves to teach so much she teaches three. Meet Mrs. Aguirre, a teacher of Honors Biology, AP Research, and Chemistry. On top of all the classes, Mrs. Aguirre sponsors the HAB’s club (Hawks against Bullying), Compromiso Latino club, and the FIDM club (Fashion Institute of Design and Marketing).
If asked about her school career, Ms. Aguirre, or as some people call her, Ms. A., would say that she was an involved student in high school as a part of the softball team and many clubs. In college, Ms. A. was a part of the tennis team and went to Brooklyn College and Liberty University. As a graduate from Brooklyn College with a science degree, Ms. A. worked at Columbia University doing research. Soon after starting that job, Mrs. Aguirre decided that it was not the place for her and went to Liberty University and got an education degree. From there she went into the school system and started teaching.
Recommendations from Ms. A. for graduation seniors would be to join clubs pertaining to their future careers and to look into scholarships and honors programs at the colleges that have major programs you are interested in. Above all, Ms. A. said to talk to your teachers; they have been through this before and likely know of little tricks to help you get accepted into colleges that will benefit you in your future.
With the holiday season rolling around, Ms. Aguirre is planning on spending a lot of time with her family. For Christmas, Ms. A. has a few traditions that stay close to her heart. One of those is making tamales with her family. At the young age of 8, Ms. A. started this grueling, 13-hour process. Although she says that it is hard work, she loves to make memories with her mom, sister, and now her niece. The recipe they use has been passed down through the generations and shows no signs of stopping soon.
Stop by and say ‘Hi’ to Mrs. Aguirre.
