“Printmaking” by Troy Smith and Emma Huff
This print, Senses in Nature, was made by Kate Howarth in Ms. French’s Art III class. She created this design because she was “trying to show how nature and our senses are connected, and even if plants don’t necessarily have the six senses, nature should still be preserved.”
Printmaking is the process of using a template made out of materials like linoleum or wood to transfer images to another surface like paper or fabric. For this project, Kate carved her print into a piece of linoleum and transferred it onto paper. There are many steps involved in the printmaking process, and these are detailed below:
Sketch out the image you want to print.
2. Transfer the sketch to linoleum and go over pencil lines with a permanent marker.
3. Carve the linoleum on the places where you want your first, and lightest, color to go.
4. Go over linoleum with the first ink color and place it on the paper.
5. Wash linoleum immediately after printing to get the ink off before it dries.
6. Repeat steps 3-5 for each layer and color until you have carved out the entire design, which looks like the design at the top.
