“Bienvenue à la Semaine du Français!” (Welcome to National French Week!)
by Brigid May
November 3rd-9th marks the twenty-first annual National French Week, organized by AATF, the American Association of Teachers of French. According to the AATF website, this “week-long celebration of all things French will take place in schools and communities and AATF chapters” across the United States. This is a time for French teachers and students to share their love for the language with their schools and communities!
After a year of little to no in-person activities for our school’s language department, Madame Guilbaud and her students are excited to celebrate the 2021 National French Week!
This year’s theme is “Venez découvrir le monde francophone” (Come discover the Francophone world). And as any student of Madame G’s can tell you, French truly is spoken across the whole world. There are millions of native speakers, as well as millions of more non-native speakers who have become fluent. French is an official language in 29 nations, and it is spoken on every continent excluding Antarctica. It is truly “une langue du monde”, a world language.
In order to celebrate the beautiful diversity of the French language and culture, the HSHS Société Honoraire de Français (French Honor Society) has fun events planned for the 3rd-9th. As President of SHF, I invite you to join us!
On Wednesday the 3rd, come to Madame G’s classroom, 3614, for French games!
On Friday the 5th, help make posters with fun facts about the Francophone world to hang up around school!
On Monday the 8th, join us for a scavenger hunt to gather facts from those posters. As well as a fun way to earn prizes, this activity will also be an opportunity for us to learn from each other, as we explore the rich “patrimoine” (cultural heritage) of the Francophone world!
On Tuesday the 9th, enter a contest to create mini “Tours d’Eiffel” (Eiffel Towers) out of cookies!
And finally, keep an eye on our school rock next week: SHF will be painting it for National French Week!
"Merci, tout le monde! À bientôt!" (Thanks, everyone! See you later!)
