“Women’s Golf”

Coach Britt discusses the success of the golf program at Holly Springs and gets real about the effects of the pandemic on 2020 graduates in an interview with Hawk Headlines.
“The pandemic was hard for our players. Since everything was shut down, we couldn’t continue. The boys team couldn’t continue playing,” Coach Britt informed me, “They were sad about their circumstances, but they took it well.”
Once the pandemic hit Wake County schools in March 2020, spring sports were at a standstill. Many students did not know if they would get to continue playing in matches, participate in regionals, or break a new record. Holly Springs students would unfortunately lack the proper completion of spring sports and a graduation ceremony.
Coach Britt, the head coach of the men’s and women’s golf programs at Holly Springs, told me that the pandemic was not completely gloomy: “We had the men’s and women’s team practice together during drills. It was a new experience, and I think all the players enjoyed bonding.” These collaborative drills were something that Coach Britt introduced during the pandemic, which helped many of his athletes during a burdensome time. It gave many of his players an aspect of community-building which was desperately needed.
Undoubtedly, both teams play exceptionally well in competitions, especially among a rigorous conference schedule. The Holly Springs women’s golf team is infamous for placing first in almost all of their matches. At a recent conference championship, they placed 1st with future 2022 graduate Marie Atwood earning a medal. In this season alone, the women’s team has placed 1st a total of seven times.
Many Hawks are extremely proud of the success that the golf program has achieved, Coach Britt being their top supporter. “I know that they are all going to do great things in college, whether it be golf or something else.” Some of Coach Britt’s seniors have already committed to a college to play golf, like James Madison University. As the women’s season nears its end, Coach Britt looks forward to the men’s season in the spring. As a dedicated teacher and coach, he aims to be optimistic and motivational for his students and athletes here at Holly Springs.
