“Mr. McConnel” by Avery Freyer
As the spring semester is getting into full swing, students are coming to the realization that it is time to register for classes. Many teachers teach great classes, but it is so hard to choose electives to take. I know of one teacher who teaches an awesome elective, commonly called Law and Justice. That teacher is Mr. McConnell. Mr. McConnell is a civics literacy and Law and Justice teacher at our HSHS who knows how to make his classes super fun. As a graduate of UNC Charlotte, Mr. McConnell knows how to make the most of a high school experience. He advises students to not fall victim to peer pressure and do what they want throughout their high school experience and beyond. While AP classes are great, Mr. McConnell says that students should not overload themselves and try to do what is good for them.
Although only involved in the Young Life club as a high school student, Mr. McConnell was very active and made the most of his time through being a member of cross-country, basketball, and golf. During his time as a teacher at HSHS, Mr. McConnell has coached men's golf and JV men's Basketball. Due to having a daughter, though, he does not currently coach any sports teams. In his free time, Mr. McConnell likes to spend time with his wife and 6-year-old daughter. Other activities that Mr. McConnell enjoys are golfing and hanging out with his work friends.
Mr. McConnell has a positive high school experience, which drove him to become a teacher. At first, he did not know what type of teacher he wanted to be. He talked to many teachers that he had during high school about their experiences. After talking to them, he came to the conclusion that he wanted to be a social studies teacher. From there, Mr. McConnell went to school to be a teacher, and the rest is history. Stop by to say hello to Mr. McConnell!
