“Pumpkin-Fest Winners” by Adeline Dewey
Have you heard about your school’s Pumpkin-Fest Contest? If not, don't fret! This was the second annual one held. The categories for this year were Best Non-Traditional, Spookiest, and Best-Painted. I had the opportunity to interview all three winners, Sydney Mayhorn, Megan Donald and Catie Bozzano, about their pumpkins.
Sydney Mayhorn was the first place winner for the Best Non-Traditional pumpkin. Sydney used Google to help her find the perfect design to carve into the pumpkin. After some searching, Sydney spent forty minutes carving an octopus into the pumpkin’s exterior. She had created the pumpkin before even knowing about the contest. Eventually, when she had heard about the contest, she joined with no expectations to win. The day after the winners were announced, a good friend of hers texted her, congratulating her on the win. She was shocked and exhilarated because she had always loved carving pumpkins, and the win made her Halloween so much better.
Halloween is said to be the spookiest holiday in the world, so it’s no surprise that there was a category for it. Megan Donald was the winner for creating the spookiest pumpkin. She had always loved horror and anything scary. Megan made her first scary pumpkin, but sadly, it rotted before she was able to submit it, but this didn’t stop her. Right away, she went out and got another pumpkin and carved the design back into it. In total, creating both pumpkins took about 2-3 days. She submitted her terrifyingly amazing pumpkin a few days before submissions closed. She had no expectations of winning since this was her first pumpkin ever carved.
Our final winner for Best-Painted was Catie Bozzano. Catie had never liked carving pumpkins, so she was thrilled to find out there was a category where carving was unnecessary. Catie had spent a while trying to find the best pumpkin, as well as the best outline to paint onto it. She planned and planned until the night before the pumpkins were due. That night, she spent around an hour and a half using acrylic paint to create her adorable scarecrow face. Creating the pumpkin the night before it was due with no expectations of winning, one can imagine her surprise when she woke up the next morning to read that she was, in fact, a winner.
It was super fun being able to talk to these great people. I loved hearing about how they came up with their ideas and how they perfectly executed them.
