All nouns in French are either masculine or feminine. Few nouns in English have a gender (e.g. man/woman, brother/sister) and English speakers might find it difficult to believe that chaise (chair) in French is feminine but stylo (pen) is masculine. There is no hardand-fast rule. So, you will need to memorise the gender of a noun together with its meaning. The gender of a noun will affect words directly connected with it (such as articles un/une, le/la) and their form will usually change accordingly. Un/une is usually the equivalent of a/an and le/la is usually the equivalent of the.
