A lot of consonants at the end of French words are silence. But if the next word begins with a vowel or a silent h it is silent no more.
Some consonants may change sound when liaison occurs
D becomes t
S becomes z
X becomes z

Chez_elle
Deux_enfants
Les = le
les enfants = lezenfant
grand = gran
grand arbre = grantarbre
Exceptions:
Un garçon aimable
Une pomme et une poire
