Que, quoi, qu'

There are several ways of saying "what" in French. The main way is the question word que. We place this before est-ce que and it becomes qu' for ease of pronunciation (qu'est-ce que).

We can also say quoi to mean "what" in informal questions. In this case, we place quoi after the verb. Have a look at the examples below to see the difference between formal and informal questions.

Formal

Qu'est-ce qu'elle aime faire pendant le week-end ? 

Qu'est-ce que tu manges ?

Colloquial

Elle aime faire quoi le week-end ? 

Tu manges quoi ? 

Have you noticed?

If we don't understand or haven't heard someone, we can say quoi on its own.

Did you know? Comment is a more polite and formal way of saying quoi when we use it on its own.

Asking for directions To ask for directions, you can simply use pour aller à (literally to go to) in the following way: 

Pour aller à l’Office du Tourisme, s’il vous plaît? 

Can you tell me the way to the Tourist Information Office, please? 

Pour aller à la poste, s’il vous plaît? 

Pour aller à l’hôtel du Parc, s’il vous plaît? 

When the noun following pour aller à is masculine and starts with a consonant, à and le combine to give au: 

Pour aller au théâtre, s’il vous plaît?
