David Ojala

David Ojala (1962)

David was an outstanding Agate athlete who earned ten varsity letters during his high school career.  This included three in football, three in hockey and four in golf.  As a senior, he was named Lineman of the Week in the Duluth Area as a member of the undefeated 1961 Seaway Championship Football Team that ranked 15th in the final state poll.  He was a senior captain of the hockey team and was named the team's MVP in 1962.  As a golfer, David was a conference runner-up and a MSHSL State Tournament participant in 1960 and placed third in the Minnesota State J.C. Jr. Tournament in 1961.  Following graduation, he received a golf scholarship to the University of Minnesota and played for three years under legendary coach, Les Bolstad.  It was during this time that he became a very prominent golfer on the local, state and national scene.  David won several popular local tournaments that still exist today.  Nationally, he participated in the USGA Amateur Public Links in 1965, 1966 and 1967, and was the runner-up in the 1966 USGA Public Links Final.  David moved to the Houston, Texas area in 1969 and continued to distinguish himself as an elite amateur golfer.  During his amateur career, he posted several impressive wins and participated in several major amateur tournaments.  As a professional, David was on the PGA Senior Tour from 1995-2001.
