Modern psychology defines the principle of “object permanence” as an intrinsic part of human development. It postulates that if an object can no longer be seen, it simply does not exist. This is why a child cries in distress when a caregiver leaves the room. Adults play “peek-a-boo” with young children, enforcing the notion of permanence. Object permanence is one of the major milestones of early childhood physical and emotional development. If one does not acquire an understanding of permanence at a very young age, problems with trust may be evidenced later in life.
Many believers, born again by the Spirit of God, have yet to achieve this critical spiritual milestone in their spiritual development. Out of their sorrowful experience, they have derived a wrong conclusion: If I cannot see God active in my healing, it means God’s healing presence does not exist. Have you passed this spiritual milestone yet? Or, have you fallen into spiritual stagnation, readily accepting God’s lack of involvement in your situation of pain and sufferning rather than His immediate response to the healing?
Faith in Jesus is “blind.” We don’t believe because we have seen or our hands have touched (1 John 1:1); we believe because the Spirit of the Living God testifies with our spirit that we are children of the Most High (Romans 8:16). When we negate God’s sovereignty in our healing, we are left to tend to ourselves. Then, we become just like the people in the Prophet Jeremiah’s days, who dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. (Jeremiah 2:13)
Question: Are you digging your own cisterns? Have you forsaken the Spring of Living Water? Reflect your understanding.
