Continuing on with our general previews of Three Dynasties, today we will be looking at some of the set's Followers, Items, and Spells. We're starting off with Followers, specifically those that make up the bulk of armies in Rokugan. We already previewed Ashigaru Levy in a previous article, but they are far from the only ashigaru to be found on the battlefields of the Empire. The upheaval of the last fifteen years has also flooded the land with countless masterless warriors such as Wandering Budoka willing to trade their skills for glory, or even just a meal.
Followers in Three Dynasties are more than static Force. Many specialized Followers, both old and new, are available to support a variety of deck builds and play styles. The new Ninja Genin has a limited but strong ability, lending itself to any deck which wants to create a Raid battle.
Our Kensai themes in the Minor Clan Alliance and Dragon Clan previews gave you a taste of the Weapons available to use. The set contains many more, both One- and Two-Handed, including new cards like Kaiu Ono and Magistrate's Justice.
In addition to each Clan's Celestial Sword already previewed, Three Dynasties also has other Unique Items worth consideration for deck space. The arrival of denizens of Tengoku has brought with them the return of powerful artifacts such as Emma-O's Amulet and our new Experienced 2 level of the Golden Obi of the Sun Goddess.
Our selection of Spells includes those that harness the destructive power of the kami in battle, including a reprint of the powerful Call the Inferno from our own Road to Ruin expansion, and old standbys like Scouring Flood...
...as well as Spell effects for outside the battlefield, many carrying unusual and esoteric effects and abilities. Spells are a unique space in the card pool, and we want to make sure we offer decks using shugenja several options which do not necessarily require wading into combat. We tap our own pool for reprints like Heaven Has No Justice from Road to Ruin, as well as deep cuts from the AEG era, such as One Virtue and Seventy Faults. Three Dynasties has a number of such Easter egg cards, reprints from old sets which we felt never had a proper chance to shine, and which may find new life in a completely transformed environment.
The extended preview of Three Dynasties comes to a conclusion with our next and final article in the series, taking a look at a selection of the set's Strategies.
