One of the opportunities we found when we decided to pull the trigger on refurbishing the Onyx Base Set during our Onyx Lives Project, was a chance to revisit some cards in the base set that, over the last seven years, ended up not quite performing as they were meant to.
We've already showed off cards like the Deathseekers, some of which have been redesigned because the themes they were meant for evolved and changed. The case is the same for some of the other Onyx base cards that have undergone revamps. Others simply weren't working out like we'd have liked them to, and this presented us an opportunity to 'spruce them up' without, as much as we could, totally changing what the card did (though this was sometimes necessary.) Here's a few of those examples.
PLEASE PARDON OUR DUST
This article originally appeared on Facebook as a work-in-progress description of changes made during our initial Onyx Lives! design phases, and the cards included used AI procedurally-generated art. The Onyx Lives! Project has made a public statement on our cessation of the use of generative AI art. Such art has been removed from the composited cards which were posted with the original preview article, in an effort to preserve the original text which may have evolved since the previews were first posted -- warts and all. The information in this article may be outdated, but it is presented here as part of an ongoing attempt to consolidate all of the various public writings we have made along the way.
