We at the Onyx Lives! Project have a small project in the works between the RtR release (planned in about 3 or so weeks) and heading into RoU playtesting.
Even though Onyx Edition was 'done' in 2015, it had not been fully vetted by the Rules Team (though things work mostly as intended), and it had not been fully proofread. This could be seen in the original versions of cards like Kakita Koutetsu, who still referred to himself by his "Soul Of" name, and other various typos and errors, as well as some poorly templated cards or cards which could use clarification, such as Genshin Sensei.
In addition to this, some cards were designed or included in the base set to reflect plans for deck types or sensei that changed later on, and now these cards seem largely useless or awkward for their respective deck types. There are also a handful of cards that have been clearly underperforming since Onyx was released, and could use a little touchup.
Normally, we would just go in and change these cards, but the reality is that FFG owns all the art assets to those cards, and we have been advised that if we want to make changes to Onyx, we at the very least must avoid using those assets in new cards. So, we would need to have new art for them, just to be on the safe side.
Finally, there are concepts introduced in the Onyx Lives project that run counter to some of the old base edition Onyx cards. Namely, things such as 'banish' replacing 'remove from the game', and the retemplating of Sincerity.
All of this is to say that we are going to release a small... glow up of Onyx edition. These cards will replace their Onyx counterparts, and will be appropriately numbered to fit seamlessly into the Sun and Moon program. We will also be releasing new PDFs for Onyx, as well as new image files for SnM as well. As we said, this won't include all of Onyx Edition, only some cards, probably less than two dozen once all is said and done. Most of them will be mechanically identical.
PLEASE PARDON OUR DUST
This article originally appeared on Facebook as a work-in-progress description of changes made during our initial Onyx Lives! design phases, and the cards included used AI procedurally-generated art. The Onyx Lives! Project has made a public statement on our cessation of the use of generative AI art. Such art has been removed from the composited cards which were posted with the original preview article, in an effort to preserve the original text which may have evolved since the previews were first posted -- warts and all. The information in this article may be outdated, but it is presented here as part of an ongoing attempt to consolidate all of the various public writings we have made along the way.
